Konstam's biographical treatment of Blackbeard is, for the most part, very well done, using the famed pirate as a good exemplar to cover Atlantic pirate culture and its leaders during the first decades of the 18th century. He does skip around a bit, which gets confusing, but other than that this treatment is quite good, and Konstam is careful to separate fact from fiction, at least to the extent possible. ( )

Overall I would say that this book is worth reading because there is a lot of info on the way the pirate community worked, both within and outside. I was somewhat disappointed because the author did not travel in one straight historical line - instead he kept jumping back and forth which made things confusing.

It's title is somewhat ambiguous as, though Blackbeard is the prominent figure, the books goes into a lot more detail than just Blackbeard. You will learn of other pirates of the same era and all the dealings that went on between them and those in legal positions of authority (Colonial Governors).

If you can stand the jumping back and forth of historical dates, then you should be OK and find this book both entertaining and informativ ( )
