In this lavishly illustrated volume, Larry McMurtry, the greatest chronicler of the American West, tackles for the first time one of the paramount figures of Western and American history--George Armstrong Custer. McMurtry also argues that Custer's last stand at the Little Bighorn should be seen as a monumental event in our nation's history. Like all great battles, its true meaning can be found in its impact on our politics and policy, and the epic defeat clearly signaled the end of the Indian Wars--and brought to a close the great narrative of western expansion.… (mer)

The only reason this book is getting two stars instead of one, is that most of the illustrations are excellent. In particular, the two stereo photos on pages 30-31 and 142 are outstanding. However, the stereo pair on pages 30-31 is not labeled as a 3D photo (view it with crossed-eyes) and most people probably think that the publisher mistakenly place the same photo on the two pages. Also, the illustrations really need more description than just their titles. It would be nice to know who painted some of the paintings, when they were painted, and where they reside. That covers all the good points of the book, now on to the rest... The text is pathetic. It appears to be just random thoughts of a Custer history fan. The paragraphs don't follow a logical flow and often repeat a phrase or thought that was written just a couple of paragraphs previously. I really can't believe that Larry McMurtry wrote this book. The text does not appear to follow any kind of chronological (or any other) order and is simply a jumbled mess. It assumes that the reader is very familiar with the biography of Custer, and vaguely references events without explaining them. I'm really glad I bought this one used and didn't pay full price for it. Welcome to my sucks-ass bookshelf Larry. ( )

Meh.

I am unclear as to why this author chose as his subject someone he clearly does not like and leaves snotty and snarky comments throughout the book.

Being that this is my first book on Gen Custer, I have no gauge for knowing what is true and what is not, as there are many many reviews on this book that claim it is inaccurate, grammatically incorrect, a bad editing job, etc.

I will have to read other books because it is very hard to get the truth when someone is writing about someone they clearly do not like or respect. ( )

Great short life on Custer and the important figures of the day. If you want a deep history, buy something else. But if you want an easy read, with a proliferation of pictures, this is for you. If you haven't read much in this area of history you will find it a bit confusing, because not a great deal of the side history is explained, but that is the beauty, to me, of a short life. There are a handful of typos and some things I would have edited differently, but they didn't ruin the book for me. I also truly appreciate the mention of Elizabeth "Libbie" Custer's memoirs. Buy the hardcover, I can't imagine the electronic version giving it any justice. ( )

History on George Armstrong Custer and the Battle of Little Big Horn. This book is filled with a lot of great information and pictures from the period as well as many art depictions of the battle. Great Coffee Table book and history. ( )
