I first met my demon the morning that Mum said Dad had gone. 'My name is Alex. I'm ten years old. I like onions on toast and I can balance on the back legs of my chair for fourteen minutes. I can also see demons. My best friend is one. He likes Mozart, table tennis and bread and butter pudding. My mum is sick. Ruen says he can help her. Only Ruen wants me to do something really bad. He wants me to kill someone.'… (mer)

I received this book from NetGalley and holy guacamole Batman, what a book! I love a good psych thriller and this book did not disappoint. Set in Ireland, this book follows a child psychiatrist as she deals with one of the most difficult cases of her career while dealing with an important event from her personal life. I appreciated that the book touched on child onset schizophrenia and the difficulties mental health professionals experience while attempting to diagnose and treat their patient. I devoured this book in one day and highly recommend others pick it up. ( )

I am not quite sure about this book. To me, the premise of a troubled 10 year old, with quite a traumatic life, who is able to see “demons” painted such a good picture.
I was going in with the idea that the demons were figurative and that it would be a case of mental health, be it schizophrenia or whatever; but from the beginning I could see that it wasn’t quite that. The author created this actual demonic presence with actions and knowledge that could not be proved otherwise than with conceding that Ruen was an actual demon.
Then, somewhere towards the very rushed, and not quite tidily finished ending, the author tries to chuck it all to mental health and figurative demons, leaving quite a lot of unfinished threads hanging loose.
That, to me, was quite disappointing. Really put me off. The whole build up was amazing; but the last part of the book was very meh and anticlimactic.
But hey, that is just me. If you want to read a heartbreaking story of a 10 year old scarred and marked in life by the reckless and selfish actions of his parents, then by all means go ahead and grab this one. Just know that there is a demon there and we can’t quite explain what it is, what it does, how it knows certain things and how it can manifest to more than one person. Enjoy the strange ride! ( )

This is a suspense novel featuring Ruen, a supernatural being, a demon only seen by a young boy. The boy, Alex, has no other friends apart from Ruen and their conversations are vivid and imaginative. The setting of Belfast, after the "troubles" gives the demon some authenticity through the mental trauma that we expect to see in children of war. Told alternately by Alex and his psychologist Anya, it's a troubling dark story. It annoyed me that Anya, whose daughter was diagnosed with early onset schizophrenia, and who committed suicide at age twelve, is diagnosing another child with the same rare condition. Is she determined to find it everywhere? And there are many coincidences and details that seemed out of place that made me wary. A good psychological suspense story. ( )

Cotton Malone stopped in Atlanta while on a book buying trip. He stopped off to see his son Gary and his ex-wife, Pam. She confronted him to find out what had happened 2 years previously when Gary decided to visit Cotton in Denmark for Thanksgiving break. Cotton relay the story which forever changed his family, and almost changed the face of English history. Cotton was asked to escort a teen to London as a favor to the CIA. The teen was a material witness to a crime. Gary and the teen got along well enough. The teen Ian was a street kid and orphan. Gary confided to him that he had just found out that Cotton wasn’t his biological father. Things got confusing in London when the three were actually taken hostage by fake cops at the airport. Things go from bad to worse, as Cotton finds out thatIan had information that the CIA and M16 both wanted. Information concerning a legend of the Biley boy, the imposter to Queen Elizabeth I. If the legend were true, Great Britain could suffer severe social upheaval. Cotton, British and American Intellegence, Gary’s biological Dad, castles, graves and escapes in the London Underground make for a page turning escapade. I really enjoyed the book and the back story. Whoa. Did not see that ending coming. My spidey sense is usually pretty good but I did not pick up on that surprise at all. Really well done! ( )
