I remember really identifying with Meg as a kid - somewhat awkward, lonely, angry, and unsure how to deal with it all. But now that I'm older (and basically an adult), I just find her... annoying. I'm not sure if my memory of the novel is faded with nostalgia or because, kind of by necessity (it's already huge), you can't really get into Meg's head very much. She just wines and misses her dad and loves Charles Wallace.

While I've read some of Hope Larson's other graphic novels and enjoyed them, I do not think her style translates well to L'Engle's world. The characters are expressionless and the color palette flat. The shades of blue wash everything out and make the characters hard to distinguish from the backgrounds, and it (unintentionally?) tinges a story about hope and love with an atmospheric despair.

Even as a child, I found the relationship between Meg and Charles Wallace a little creepy, and the graphic novel doesn't really help clear up matters. Why is he so insistent on "protecting" her? Why does he have a special relationship with his mom and her but not any of his male relatives? Do they just seem codependant or are they?

I've been a little reluctant to re-read A Wrinkle in Time because I was scared it wouldn't hold up to my memories (it was one of the first science fiction books I remember reading, and now I know that it isn't really science fiction at all, for example), and was hoping the graphic novel would be a good way to refresh my memory of a childhood classic. Unfortunately, it made me doubt my fondness and made me even more reluctant to revisit it. ( )

Quick read. Moralistic. Fascinating story of space-time travel via "tesseract", with the help of the three witches and a friend, two children search for their father who has been lost fending off the darkness of humanity. A little disappointed the illustrations were not in full-colour. The story was too short for me, but it is a children's book after all. ( )

Ok, so I have to admit I've never read A Wrinkle in Time before, and from what I knew about it, it didn't interest me much. However, I was willing to give it a shot since I love Hope Larson's work. Final verdict: the story didn't do much for me. I didn't really like the characters or the Christian overtones and found the plot somehow overly simplistic and convoluted at the same time. Of course, I liked the artwork, but I did wish that maybe Larson would change the color scheme or the contours as the characters traveled from planet to planet to show how dramatically time and space were shifting. Ah well. ( )

A Wrinkle in Time is a great graphic novel. The premise of the novel is that time itself is being corrupted and changed around and it must be fixed.
The novel is a chapter novel that is science fiction. Great read for older students above and in the fourth grade. The artwork is mostly digital and in related to comic style art. ( )
