Nausicaa is a princess from the Valley of the Wind, a small kingdom at the fringes of the Sea of Corruption. It is one of a handful of small kingdoms that are all that is left of an earlier larger empire of Eftal that had grown up with the aid of technology after the global event known as the Seven Days of Fire. The kingdom subsists on agriculture and trade with others. Ancient treaties require them to provide military aid to the large Torumekian Empire. They do well, but their numbers dwindle and other small communities are routinely swalloed up by the Corruption. The earth has changed in the thousand years after the God Warriors burned the world and poisoned the land. Out of the polluted soil sprang a toxic forest and insects. A whole ecosystem whose spores produce poisonous miasma. The corruption continues to spread and wherever it has seeded there is no taking it back. The forest is protected by large insects that swarm when disturbed. With dwindling resources the remaining powers fight with each other and leave each other vulnerable. Nausicaa is drawn into a military conflict, serving in place of her ill father, which quickly grows out of control and threatens the rest of the existing world. She has a communion and empathy with all life, including that of the toxic forest, and soon makes allies of many unlikely foes. Can she find a way to prince peace to humanity and save it from itself? This was such a great story. I loved the ending. Miyazaki did an excellent job with his film, but the manga is deeper and provides a lot more information. It is more relevant than ever. An absolute must-read. Hayao Miyazaki wrote the complete Nausicaä over a long period of time, being unable to adeptly bring the epic to a close. Thus, while Nausicaä maintains its action and audience attention, it continues to develop more interesting philosophical dialogue as the plot progresses, as Miyazaki aims to provide this discourse, but was running out of ideas as the series increased in length. Please note the following: 1) The Box Set (this edition) includes two very ornate hardcover volumes of Nausicaä, as well as posters of concept art. 2) The plot of the Nausicaä manga diverges from the 1984 film (of the same name) after the first act. Though the Miyazaki movie is fantastic, the manga expands on themes, and creates new themes that the movie would never had been able to probe due to its time constraints and medium. I have read these individually years ago, but this is a re-read of the boxed set.
Introduces Nausicaä and her post-apocalyptic world. The war between the Torumekian Empire and the Dorok Principalities begins, engulfing the world and involving the Valley of the Wind. And something is stirring the insects from the Forest of Corruption, which threatens all.
Volume 2 (Parts 5-7)
In the aftermath of the destruction of Dorok lands, Nausicaa and her allies head toward the Holy Tomb of Shuwa, where they hope to uncover the heart of the mystery of their world. I found this second volume quite moving, and I even shed a few tears. Overall quite an amazing tale, great world building. ( )
