**spoiler alert** I hated the ending of this book. I hated that the Darkling died. I hated that Alina pretended she died and ran off into the country with Mal. I did however like that they ended up running the orphanage. I will say that the ending was supposed to be what happened to these characters (a happily ever after)
But it truly just wasn't the ending I wanted. ( )

Don't get me wrong, I liked this book and I think it was an okay wrap up to the series but it just wasn't my favorite. I just didn't really like the last 50ish pages of the book. I wish the series had ended on a stronger note. I never really grew to love the characters. The only character I really liked were Zoya and Misha. This was especially apparent to me in this book and made it really hard for me to truly enjoy the end of this series. I thought the twists were a little weak. I didn't see any of them coming or anything I just didn't like the direction they pushed the story in. I definitely liked the first half of the book way more than I liked the second because I liked the group dynamic that showed up more in the first parts of the book. Overall not a terrible finale and I definitely want to read Bardugo's other series six of crows because I hear that it is much better than these books. I am happy to be done with the series and moving on to my next read. ( )

I'm not 100% sure how to rate this book - it's a great end to the series, logically consistent and with everything tied up, but it falls apart into cliches and predictability in the end, which I always hate.

First, the good:
I love how Alina understood Genya's internal struggle and desire for belonging, and forgave her and stood up for her
The friendship between the girls (and the [obvious] romance between Tamar and Nadia) was refreshing, strong, and realistic
Nikolai's development, how he suffered and understood that ruling is never going to be easy just because he's charismatic and charming
The portrayal of sacrifice and struggle for the group, that there are people who value safety over ideals or who are just too scared to participate in a rebellion
Baghra's sacrifice and interaction with the Darkling
The reveal that the final amplifier gave the non-Grisha the power to vanquish the Fold and that Alina lost it and mourned that loss

What I didn't like:
There was no character development for either Mal or Alina: She never grew past her preoccupation that she was plain and useless, that it was impossible to go against the Darkling, that Mal didn't love her... all her doubts were the exact same ones from the first book. And Mal was always the perfect, dutiful man, perfect at everything he attempts and perfectly in love with Alina no matter what she does
There was almost something there when Alina asked Mal if their connection was just because he was the third amplifier and she needed him to complete her power, but it was barely discussed and too easily brushed over
My BIGGEST gripe, of course, is Mal's survival. There was Baghra's warning that Alina wouldn't be able to deal with the sacrifice that bringing the amplifiers together would entail, and her refusal to kill Mal and instead attempt to kill the Darkling in some other way 9which was super annoying and impractical, but in line with Alina's weak character and unwillingness to sacrifice), which was really interesting and touching - but then Tamar and Tolya bring him back to life. They don't save him in the nick of time, as he definitely had to be dead for the amplifiers powers to combine, and there was the whole deal about Molova's(?) punishment for bringing his daughter back to life and how that changed her which was totally ignored in Mal's case (also, just the fact that Tolya and Tamar are so powerful, and good at everything is so annoying). If you're going to make that big of a deal about sacrifice and how creating life is a dangerous power that shouldn't be meddled with, stick with it! Don't just ignore it for the sake of ~love~

Otherwise, this is a solid ending to a good trilogy, and not too unexpected for a YA series that has a romantic arc. ( )

This is the final chapter of Bardugo's Girsha trilogy. Alina and Mal are searching for the final amplifier. The key to unlocking Alina's full power, or the weapon that will destroy her. No one knows which, but it is their only option, their only hope to be able to defeat the Darkling.

The first book of this series was Bardugo's debut. I enjoyed watching her grow, so much, from the 1st to third book. Her fourth, Six of Crows and the follow-up to that Crooked Kingdom sealed the deal-She is one of my favorite young adult authors. But wait! She will publishing an adult fantasy(actual tagged "New Adult" by some GReaders) in October. That I am anticipating!!!!

Keep pumping them out [a:Leigh Bardugo|4575289|Leigh Bardugo|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1534446099p2/4575289.jpg], you have a loyal, loving fan base. ( )

The last book in the Shadow and Bone trilogy. A satisfying ending but a long way to get there.

This final book is about Alina just as she escaped the darkling in the last book. They find a series of tunnels underground leading to a chapel. Here she restors her power and finds herself trapped by the hand of the Apparat. After she escapeds and finds back her power she makes a plan to find the third amplifier and to stop the Darkling for once and for all.

Like I said in my previous reviews, I've had this series on my shelves for over 2 years. Never really felt like picking them up know a lot of people didn't like them as much as the six of crows duology. After reading the whole trilogy I can say I'm one of those people. Not that this series is bad, by all means I actually enjoyed myself with it. It just has a serious case of a debut series.
This last book was just okay for my taste. I was looking forward to the finding of the last amplifier and what it would do for the story. I was also curious what the big confrontation would look like. Unfortunately these things kind of disappointed me. The story was such a build up for finding the third amplifier I wanted to get to it as soon as possible. When we finally learn what the amplifier is I was kind of disappointed. The first 60% of the book felt like a little slow for me. They spend a lot of time under ground and trapped by the Apparat. When they finally got out and had to find a way out with a small group was actually the part where I started to enjoy the book. Only to have it going to meh agian when they met up with Nickolai. One of my favorate characters! The story really stopped there with the action and in my taste neber really picked it up again.
I have to talk about Nickolai for a second.
I'm including spoilers so beware!
What happend to him? He was an amazing character in the second book. Only to have him turn into a flying monster beast? No explanation or motive to put him through this? Not even something to clarify how they turned him back? It felt like Bardugo had written herself into a corner and had to figure out something to do with him. I can't think of another reasonable explanation.
Now what I really liked was the ending. It felt like the perfect ending that everybody can be satisfied with.

A good ending to this story if you can overlook the slow parts ( )
