  • WARNING: NOT FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

  • This book contains foul language and fouler descriptions of life as a zombie. It will offend most anyone, so proceed with caution or not at all.

And be forewarned: This is not a zombie book. This is a different sort of tale. It is a story about the unfortunate, about those who did not get away. It is a human story at its rotten heart. It is the reason we can't stop obsessing about these creatures, in whom we see all too much of ourselves.

This book is a collection of stories told through the perspectives of several different zombies. While the characters and what they went through weren't necessarily connected, the shared environment tied everything together nicely. Howey did a great job with these tales - each character felt unique and brought something new. Definitely very gory - while I have a strong stomach, I can imagine others not being able to handle some of the events in this book. Overall, though, I enjoyed this book. ( )

This was very very well done - It is only the second book I have read where the POV is from the Zombie side, and it is extremely well done. You feel sorry for them, and are mad at them, all at the same time.

Only drawback in my opinion is that it ends too soon, and isn't really resolved (unlike human protagonists, there is never really an end to zombiehood, so this lack of resolution is also reflective of the nature of the story). This might not even be a drawback... if someone is disappointed in the fact that a book ends because they want to read more, that pretty much makes it an excellent read, huh.

It was an excellent read. I have already read some of Howey's works (Shift), and this is much much better than I expected. ( )

Spooky. Und sehr sehr gory. Für Genrefreunde sicher ein heißer Tip! ( )

I'm a big fan of Hugh Howie's Silo series so I was looking forward to something a little different. Well, this is the first of his books I've abandoned - not because the writing is at all bad, but it's maybe a little too good. I just couldn't make it through the gruesome, stomach-churning descriptions. I do enjoy a good zombie movie/TV show, but yeah, I'm the guy who covers his eyes when entrails are involved. And there are LOTS of entrails in this one.

I did enjoy seeing zombie life from their perspective and I think that was a clever and unexpected switch. I was curious about where these characters were going to end up but just couldn't stomach it and finally had to give up. ( )

You may have seen warnings about this book that it's gory and it's not for the weak of... stomach. This is extremely true. Do not ignore these warnings. Granted, I read this book while eating dinner (consisting of noodles, no less) but I have a pretty strong stomach.

This is quite a different type of zombie book, one that I have not come across before (and I've read a decent amount of zombie books!). It takes your typical flesh-eating, shuffling zombie and wonders what if the original human mind did not disappear? Basically the mind becomes a slave to the virus (or whatever, this point was not relevant in the book) that turns a normal human being into a zombie. As a human trapped inside a zombie body, you feel incredible revulsion over what your body is doing, to the point where you feel like throwing up, but the body doesn't stop and you can do nothing to control your actions.

The book was pretty unsettling and certainly is not for everyone. I'm glad that I read it but would never read it again, that's for sure. ( )
