In Evil Behind That Door, by Barbara Fradkin we meet handyman Cedric Elvis O'Toole, who has been helping old school mate (but not friend) Barry Mitchell clean up his parent's house in order to sell it, Barry's parents having disappeared the previous winter and presumed drowned. In the basement, there is a boarded up door leading to....what? Perhaps an old storm cellar, or a storage area for preserves - Cedric doesn't know, but he definitely wants to find out. Barry, on the other hand, is nearly hysterical in his need to keep the door closed, which is not a good mental state for a hard-drinking bully to be in, as Cedric learns to his cost.... This is a short novella, part of a series called Rapid Reads which aims to provide "reluctant readers" with a good story that they can read quickly and without too much difficulty in terms of vocabulary and such; I picked it up in e-book form just because I like Fradkin's writing and at $2.99, what have I got to lose? I understand that there are more stories featuring Cedric, and as he's a likeable fellow with some hidden depths (people think he's dumb, but really he just takes his time to think things through), I'll pick more up, particular if they're part of this worthy cause. When softhearted handyman Cedric O'Toole agrees to help Barry Mitchell renovate his farmhouse, he finds himself facing old fears. Not only did Mitchell bully Cedric all through school, but his life has been troubled ever since. Now, just out of prison, he's broke and his parents have gone missing, leaving a cloud of suspicion hanging over his head. But when Barry warns him not to touch the boarded-up door in the cellar, the ever-curious Cedric can't resist. The small storage room, obviously unused in years, contains jars of preserves, barrels of dried apples and a pile of small bones. As he sets out to discover who died and how, Cedric uncovers a tale of violence, deception and abuse. And he learns just how far Barry will go to keep a tragic family secret from coming to light.
