Everyone in Rafe’s life is comfortable with his homosexuality, almost too comfortable. When he arrives at boarding school and establishes a new identity, he must grapple with the unintended consequences of hiding a major piece of himself.

Rafe is a normal teenager from Boulder, Colorado. He plays soccer. He's won skiing prizes. He likes to write.

And, oh yeah, he's gay. He's been out since 8th grade, and he isn't teased, and he goes to other high schools and talks about tolerance and stuff. And while that's important, all Rafe really wants is to just be a regular guy. Not that GAY guy. To have it be a part of who he is, but not the headline, every single time.

So when he transfers to an all-boys' boarding school in New England, he decides to keep his sexuality a secret -- not so much going back in the closet as starting over with a clean slate. But then he sees a classmate breaking down. He meets a teacher who challenges him to write his story. And most of all, he falls in love with Ben... who doesn't even know that love is possible. ( )

An interesting coming-of-age story of a gay high school student who is sick of being "the gay kid" and reinvents himself as straight at his new boarding school. I liked it, but the lack of resolution really bothered me. I know there's a sequel, but the book just seems unfinished. Too many loose plot lines for me. ( )

There were some things I liked a lot about this book - interesting characters and relationships, good dialogue, snappy narration - but the central conceit made me irritated with the main character and less sympathetic to his problems. The central conceit also seemed like a new twist on an old story - it's not too different from the plot of Mean Girls, for example.

The end of the book seemed really pat and cutesy to me - like the sort of thing Rafe's writing teacher would have pushed him to reconsider.

The first two-thirds of this book were great! Konigsberg did a good job of examining what it means to be gay and balancing different perspectives while telling an interesting story about Rafe and his classmates. Some interesting food for thought, and a cool angle to tackle everything from. I also kind of liked the addition of the journal entries for flashbacks and further characterization, though I think I could’ve done without so many of the teacher’s comments on them.

And then, two-thirds in, Rafe fumbled his plan and Konigsberg fumbled the book. It got preachy, and not just in the expected “it’s better to be out and who you are” way (though that stays reasonably nuanced). It also veered into awkward relationships (probably accurate, however) and awkward relationship advice and even a bit of messaging about appreciating your parents. Thematically, this almost works. Plot-wise, it decohered, and I can’t help thinking that a better writer, or a writer with more time to massage the story, could have stuck the ending and fit everything that had to be there (messages included) into a tighter shape.
