Reading this book made me feel very nostalgic. I was utterly captivated by the "Madeline" books as a child, and watched the movie repeatedly! This particular story is how Madeline slips and falls into the water and a dog comes to her rescue. Madeline, the other girls, and Miss Clavel adopt the K-9 hero and name her Genevieve. The girls all squabble about who gets to sleep with her, until one day when she is sent away. They all come together to find her, and when they do, Genevieve gives them the surprise of puppies for all.
Ludwig Bemelman's award winning illustrations are charming and humorous. Although I love the colorful drawings of Paris' landscapes, I like how the simple yellow and white drawings portray the emotions on the character's faces.
Madeline's Rescue lacks any true moral to the story; however, I believe a small lesson in sharing could be taught.
This book is simply a cute and playful read any child would enjoy. ( )
