When the miller dies, he leaves his cat "Puss" to his youngest son. The young man is so poor he is tempted to eat the cat and make a hat from his fur. Puss overhearing this tells his new master that he will prove he is a good inheritance. He simply asks for a pair of walking boots and a bag. After his master provides him with his boots and bag, Puss sets off to help his master. Puss is so clever he outsmarts a king and an ogre. In the end Puss provides his master with land and a castle. His master even marries a princess. My children loved this story, of Puss the witty cat. My son loved that Puss not only had boots but a cute red hat. ( )

This traditional fairy tale would be a fun read for young children. Although there is no true moral to the story, and in fact, the actions of the cunning Puss would be considered quite immoral, the story was still fairly interesting. As there isn't much educational value in this book-- besides it being a book-- I think that it would be suitable for a short and casual read-aloud in a pk-1 class or for children to peruse during independent reading time, but I wouldn't use it for much more than that. I had never heard of the tale of Puss in Boots. I had seen it in some children movies but never really had a background of what it was. I think the author (and illustrator) had an easy flow of words that made it easier to follow along with the story. I also feel like the illustrations were lively, and I loved that even if the page had a long paragraph or two on it, it still had an illustration on it. I think this is great because for a child that may be having a hard time to understand the words, they can look at the pictures and really see what they are trying to depict. ( )
