Entertaining, and I love books about books, but rather implausable. Since I listened to, rather than read, this novel, it had to have been particularly egregious for me to notice the stretching of my credulity. The novel amounts to essentially a mystery, and I feel it's in the same class as my favorite Nancy Drews, if quite a bit more literate, or more literary. I did love my Nancy Drews, though. ( )

I really enjoyed this book and found it really hard to put down. It was a fascinating read, interesting, tense and just so enjoyable. ( )

This book is for book lovers, collectors, book historians, researchers, and those who enjoy a good story. What you will find here is a mystery, a love story, some book history, and chances are good you will not work out the whodunit until the very end of the book. The story has frequent changes in time period, setting, and point of view. I didn't find it confusing, but that was because I learned very early on to pay attention to the chapter headings that always told me when and where I was. I’ll also throw in that there was a little supernatural element to the novel, which made it all the more intriguing for me, at least. The story as a whole is gritty, fast-paced, and engaging. I loved how Lovett combines both Peter’s story with that of the rare books trade. Not only do we see Peter’s personal story, we see the story of the lost Shakespeare manuscript and how writers, booksellers, and collectors are connected throughout time. They all share a passion for preserving literary history.
If you are a fan (like I am) of Carlos Ruiz Zafon, I think this story will greatly appeal to you. ( )

Compelling book-ish mystery -- the discovery of a manuscript from the 1500s that validates Shakepeare as the real deal -- but characters are not quite believable -- especially Peter's transformation from anxious nervous Nellie to super sleuth. Entertaining overall. ( )

Tale well told. Sort of book you want for a rainy summer's day or cold winter's day
with a cup of coffee. ( )

The Bookman’s Tale is told in a straightforward manner quite unlike the fanciful prose of Spaniard Ruiz Zafon or the clinical narrative of Brooks. Though his narrative wends through time, the words Mr. Lovett chooses are rather plainspoken, though not without their own melody. He projects heartfelt warmth that is lacking in both Ruiz Zafon’s or Brooks’ novels.
One aspect in which this novel struggles is with time jumps. The bibliophile who is careful and who can get past that small failing, however, is in for a treat.

"Although the discussion of the provenance of Shakespeare’s plays will appeal to bibliophiles, the frequent flashbacks to bygone days interrupt the narrative flow."

"A pleasurably escapist trans-Atlantic mystery is intricately layered with plots, murders, feuds, romances, forgeries—and antiquarian book dealing."
