" Defense attorney Mickey Haller returns with a haunting case in the gripping new thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly. Mickey Haller gets the text, "Call me ASAP - 187," and the California penal code for murder immediately gets his attention. Murder cases have the highest stakes and the biggest paydays, and they always mean Haller has to be at the top of his game. When Mickey learns that the victim was his own former client, a prostitute he thought he had rescued and put on the straight and narrow path, he knows he is on the hook for this one. He soon finds out that she was back in LA and back in the life. Far from saving her, Mickey may have been the one who put her in danger. Haunted by the ghosts of his past, Mickey must work tirelessly and bring all his skill to bear on a case that could mean his ultimate redemption or proof of his ultimate guilt. The Gods of Guilt shows once again why "Michael Connelly excels, easily surpassing John Grisham in the building of courtroom suspense" (Los Angeles Times)"--… (mer)

Haller has a client that he honestly thing is innocent of the crime he's accused of. Nothing special in that story, but I really like these books. There are several themes that communicate with me on a level that makes me fall into the story. I was contemplating giving the book a 5, but I don't do such things for book that I just love unless I have a great excuse and I do not have one. ( )

Grabbed this book because of the Lincoln Lawyer movie. Didn't disappoint. It is so good.
Will search for his other books. Thumbs up! ( )

I started getting really tired of this series when all the character growth was being reversed off screen. It happened in every previous book, and now it happened in this one. ( )

Mickey Haller book #5

It has been years since I read the previous novel so picking up at this point what was I in for? Can I picked here and not be lost? No problems, Mr. Connelly smoothly brought his readers to speed and it was easy to go forward from there.

“The Gods of Guilt”, brings us to now.

Left haunted by the ghosts of his past, Mickey brings all his skill to get his client out of prison after the man was accused of killing a former client of his: a prostitute he thought he had rescued and put on straight and narrow path. The call he received got his immediate attention.....and ours also.

If you like legal thrillers this may be a story for you. We have plenty of drama both in the courtroom and outside of it. Like the people he defenses. Mickey is not a nice guy; he will go to no ends to win a mistrial. His strategy is not to uncover the truth but to develop a credible alternative theory of the crime. As readers we follow the investigations and the climactic courtroom scene and along the way we learn a little more about Mickey’s complex backstory. Mr. Connelly is great in setting up characters, giving us riveting courtroom drama with all the maneuvers, tit for tat dialogue and never ending suspense.

But, yes once again I have a but...even with all the good words said about this book I nevertheless got bored with the never ending court room theatrics...I may take me some years before I get to book #6.....we will see ( )

I like Michael Connelly. I have read all of the Bosch novels, in order. The Lincoln Lawyer series I have also read so far, but not in order.

Like Bosch, Mickey Haller dwells on his past mistakes and walks around weighed down by guilt. He messes up his personal relationships and tries to fix them. But is very much obsessed with his work as well.

Haller is a lawyer who works out of his Lincoln Towncar, with a chauffer. Some readers might recall that a movie was made of the first of this series. In this book Haller makes references to the movie, and mentions seeing other Lincolns parked outside the courthouse now, with other lawyers following his lead. It's a funny kind of aside.

As to the case. An online pimp asks for his help. He has been arrested for the murder of a prostitute working through him. It turns out that Haller knew the victim from way back, and had done a lot of work for her. His sense of obligation to her continues as he takes the case and tries to find out what really happened.

There are many possible scenarios, including that Mickey's client actually killed her. When the case goes to court at last, we are treated to many pages of brilliant courtroom dialogue and maneuvering. I suspect that Connelly understands enough about law to create a case that might have actually happened, if the stars and the judge and some other things aligned properly. At least it drew me in and I didn't sense any false notes.

It was an interesting and absorbing journey but I didn't get as much from Haller as I have always gotten from Bosch. Could be just because Haller isn't as much of a dark, brooding character, and I have a fondness for the dark and brooding.
