An action-packed fantasy novel set mostly in Japan. While the characters are enjoyable and the premise is interesting (main character writes reality and enters unwittingly into a battle among Japanese gods and demons), the proliferation of names, Japanese words, and settings makes it really hard to follow. I made it through, though. ( )

A girl, Nikki, has grown up with "hypergraphia", a condition where she feels compelled to write. Her powerful mother has treated her as if she is insane, but she is making her life work by writing successful horror novels. She escapes her mother by fleeing to Japan where she discovers her hypergraphia is really a mystical power of an oracle. She stumbles into a murder connected to other-worldly beings, falls in love with a half-human, and in the process of saving him, grows into her own power and saves the world.

I don't know why but I didn't like this as much as Spencer's other books. I enjoyed it but I didn't love it. I would read a sequel if there was one but .. I'm not eagerly awaiting one. I think there were too many threads that fit together distantly and I had to keep reminding myself about who the non-main characters were. Possibly made more difficult because the many Japanese names were unfamiliar. Although I did made the Japanese setting interesting. ( )

I was kind of hesitant once I got the book that I would get that far into it. I started it last night and got sucked in and was about a 1/4 of the way in. Read some more today and I think I'm about half way. Very interesting storyline!
Nikki has to write, she learns in Japan that she is an oracle and all that she writes has or will happen. With help she learns that sometimes she can change the future that sh writes. Interesting to see if this becomes a series. ( )
