La lettura della trama mi aveva parecchio intrigata: Cormoran Strike sembrava proprio il tipo scalcagnato che attira facilmente le simpatie del lettore – o almeno le mie. E così, infatti, è stato: già la sua entrata in scena è tutto un programma. Il detective Strike ce la mette proprio tutta a manifestarsi nell'interezza del suo stato disastroso.

Eppure Galbraith (alias Rowling) non cade nella trappola del genio dannato: Strike non è un eccentrico bohémien che si è dato alle investigazioni private. Fin da subito appare chiaro come, pur nella rovina sentimentale e finanziaria, Strike sappia usare bene la testa.

Difatti, si scopre ad apprezzare le qualità della sua segretaria, Robin, eccitata dall'idea di lavorare per un investigatore privato e allo stesso tempo perplessa davanti allo stato di Strike (difficile darle torto, in effetti). Robin è la perfetta assistente di Strike: equilibrata, integerrima, discreta. È stato molto divertente leggere del modo in cui interagiscono.

In generale, quello che ho maggiormente apprezzato in questo romanzo è stata proprio la caratterizzazione dei personaggi. La Rowling è molto abile nel mostraci le sfaccettature delle personalità e nel farci pensare: “Chi è davvero costui?”. Una qualità molto apprezzabile.

Tuttavia, nemmeno la maestria della caratterizzazione è riuscita a nascondere un giallo debole. Il colpevole mi è stato così evidente fin da subito che purtroppo l'abilità della Rowling mi è sembrato un mero – per quanto lodevole – esercizio di stile. Spero che la Rowling stia solo scaldando i motori per i prossimi, già annunciati, episodi. ( )

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I know a lot of people are not huge fans of the author but I prefer to separate books from their authors. A story can be good even if I don't agree with an author's views.

On to the review.

This first installment in the Cormoran Strike series starts with an underworked detective getting a new temporary employee and a new case. John Bristow, the brother of Strike's old friend comes to see him. John's brother died many years ago, afterwards, his parents adopted a daughter named Lula. She become a famous model and committed suicide a few months back. Only John is 100% convinced that Lula was murdered and he wants Strike to prove it.

Strike reluctantly takes the case because he is in massive debt and has so few cases to work on at the moment. Soon, he and his new assistant Robin, are exploring London and tracking clues that will lead to what happened the day Lula died.

I quite enjoyed this book. I had my suspicions on what had happened and how and I was totally wrong. I am usually right when I read these kind of books so that was refreshing. I am now picking up the second from my local library.

Things I liked: interesting characters, really exciting last 100 pages, how the characters all had stuff going on, Robin and Strike's working relationship, the kitten envelopes

Things I didn't like: not a great discussion of mental health, it dragged a bit at times ( )

Absorberend in onderhoudend geschreven! Een flinke aanrader als je van het genre houdt. Het verhaal speelt zich deels af in begoede kringen en de betere Londense buurden, deels in de wereld van fotomodels en sterren, deels in Denmark Street waar Cormoran Strike met zijn buro huist. Je krijgt een inkijk in de wereld van Robin, zijn interimhulp. ( )

I read a lot of bad reviews about this book but is very good. It's not a classic and is certainly not an award wining book. The story is well thought out and the clues are drip fed well. Where it falls down is the relationship between strike and his receptionist. It feels forced and hollow. ( )
