Torn between 3 and 4 stars, since I don't think I can claim to like something that makes me feel so ill. ( )

Incredible writing and storytelling. So many things are done so brilliantly to keep the intrinsic horror of the story in the readers mind. The framing of the narrative as somewhere between an academic and personal text, placing it in an uncanny valley sort of state, Perina's well told engaging story that just often enough sharply pulls the reader back to the evil of his actions, his dislikable yet all too recognizable personality, that he feels completely justified in his destruction of others. The way the story is told makes the reader complicit in Perina's actions, as if we are honest with ourselves, we know that nothing is done to stop men like Perina from doing exactly as he does. ( )

Dark and strange, but a fascinating story that I really enjoyed reading. ( )

This book is a graphic and brutal foray into the psyche of a man responsible for a breakthrough investigation of a tribe that has apparently discovered a route to immortality. I have to say that, having read _A Little Life_ (which I loved despite its depressing nature), I was quite disappointed by this offering. First, I was excruciatingly bored by the anthropological expedition itself (which takes up the bulk of the novel) - the tedious descriptions of the island and the repetitive nature of the findings of the narrator. Second, the footnotes were over the top - there were way too many of them, their length daunting and the minute print agonizing - some of them running to a more than a page long. Third, the interior monologue of the narrator makes him out to be a wretched/tortured pederast who is not likeable in the least. Why was this book written? I just could not get my head around any aspect of the whole venture – I finished it, but felt like throwing it across the room and into the garbage several times. ( )

Norton Perina is a scientist who is brought to an island to study a very unknown race of people. He discovers many things about their culture and learns that they are much older than we are accustomed to people being.
He learns the secret of their long lives and earns many awards in doing so. In time, he adopts some of the children from the island and brings them back to the United States and raises them.

This was extremely well written and fascinating in its whole way of being done as a reference novel about Norton Perina. ( )

Hanya Yanagihara’s novel takes the form of a purported memoir of a disgraced medical scientist-slash-anthropologist, introduced and footnoted by one of his colleagues. It’s hard to ascertain who is less reliable here: the doctor, Norton Perina, imprisoned for abusing native children he adopted, or his delusional supporting amanuensis, who thinks the doctor is being vilified and who falls all over himself to make excuses for Perina’s odd behavior. ... In short, it’s just too damned interesting to put down, which makes it an extremely auspicious debut novel.

PROSPERO:

A devil, a born devil, on whose nature

Nurture can never stick; on whom my pains

Humanely taken, all, all lost, quite lost;

And as with age his body uglier grows

So his mind cankers. I will plague them all,

Even to roaring.
