I Wasn't Strong Like This When I Started Out, a collection of true narratives, reflects the dynamism and diversity of nurses, who provide the first vital line of patient care. Here, nurses remember their first "sticks," first births, and first deaths, and reflect on what gets them though long, demanding shifts and keeps them in the profession. The stories reveal many voices from nurses at different stages of their careers: One nurse-in-training longs to be trusted with more "important" procedures, while another questions her ability to care for nursing home residents. An efficient young emergency room nurse finds his life and career irrevocably changed by a car accident. A nurse practitioner wonders whether she has violated professional boundaries in her care for a homeless man with AIDS, and a home care case manager is the sole attendee at a funeral for one of her patients. What connects these stories is the passion and strength of the writers, who struggle against burnout and bureaucracy to serve their patients with skill, empathy, and strength.… (mer)

Defiantly an interesting title. And reading this book it becomes very clear that nurses have to be strong.Nur sing is one of the most physically and emotionally challenging jobs out there and sadly their voices aren't always heard. This book is long over due. Doctors grab all the glory in the medical field and nurses are all to often the unsung heroes. This book sings their songs; loud & strong. ( )

Heart-warming, heart-wrenching, funny, sad. These collected essays offer an inside look into the work lives and motivations of the often overlooked heroes on the healthcare frontlines.

Worth the time I spent with the audiobook. ( )

This book was very simply written. It is easily relatable for any nurse. Personally I probably wouldn't read this one twice. ( )

So interesting. I loved the variety of stories and have a new appreciation for nurses now. ( )

Wonderful, fascinating, with a great variety of stories. As a parent who has spent most of this past year in and out of hospitals with a sick child, I loved getting a glimpse "behind the surgical mask" to learn about the nurses taking such care of my child. Strongly recommended. ( )

This book makes an argument and defends it successfully 21 times: nurses are and should be at the forefront of patient care. Their work should be acknowledged and commended. They do not perceive themselves to be heroes, but indeed they are, if only because, in the words of nurse Casper, they “…wouldn’t trade an evening on the floor for any night out.” Before reading the book I had the maximum amount of respect and appreciation towards nurses. After reading the book, it quadrupled.

If you can afford reading only one book of non-fictional medical narratives this year, this book should be it!

It is beautifully wrought, but more significantly a reminder that these “semi-invisible” people, as Lee Gutkind calls them in this new book, are now the “indispensable and anchoring element of our health care system.”
