A year ago Alyssa plunged down the rabbit hole in the hopes of saving her mother, a year ago she and Jeb faced the wildness of Wonderland together, a year ago she was human, or so she thought. A lot can change in a year. The Red Queen was defeated, her mother was declared sane and returned home, Alyssa was crowned Queen and Jeb lost all memories of his time in Wonderland.

Despite her royal position Alyssa returned to the human world, leaving Wonderland behind. But now Wonderland is in turmoil, events from a year ago have set in motion Wonderlands downfall and as queen only Alyssa can fix the problems she caused in her quest for the crown. Only it is not just Wonderland that is in danger but the humans she loves, and to save then all she will have to face her greatest fear.

Unhinged pushes Alyssa to the edge of sanity and into the chaos that only a netherling of Wonderland could enjoy. But there is real danger when Wonderland begins to invade the human world putting the lives of all at risk, and the only hope of survival lies within insanity and a train ride down memory lane. A twisted and dramatic story that ends with the promises of adventure to come. ( )

Another great addition to the Splintered series. I love this series so much, and this book was a bit different than the first. The whole setting being in the human world instead of Wonderland. ( )

This review is also featured on Behind the Pages: Unhinged

Alyssa has chosen the human realm over Wonderland. But there is a certain netherling that refuses to let her go. Morpheus invades her dreams every night, showing her glimpses of Wonderland and tempting her to return. Morpheus claims Wonderland is falling apart without Alyssa, but he is a devious trickster and she refuses to believe him. But when traces of Wonderland begin to appear in the human realm, it becomes harder to ignore the signs. Soon Alyssa will find herself fighting for not only Wonderland but the human realm as well.

After reading Splintered, I was ready for another dark and beautiful tale. But to my surprise, Unhinged was slower to progress than the first novel. Alyssa is filled with internal conflict and does not want to tap into her netherling side. She is determined to leave the magic and chaos behind. Due to Alyssa’s steadfast attempts to avoid Wonderland, much of Unhinged focuses on a more typical young adult story. Senior year uncertainties, finals, prom, peers gossiping, etc. Granted there is some chaos thrown into the mix of a magical sort, but nothing that I expected.

However, A.G. Howard did a wonderful job keeping the emotional intensity between Jeb and Alyssa alive. I loved their scenes together and the energy they brought to the pages. And while they do have mundane obstacles to overcome with their relationship, adding Morpheus into the mix ramped up the tension. And he is not afraid to stir up trouble. He will pull out all his tricks and riddles in an attempt to lead Alyssa down darker roads.

And despite the slower pace, some landslide twists came about from Unhinged. While I could guess a few, others caught me completely by surprise. I do wish there had been more of the dark chaos which initially drew me into this series, but I recognize Unhinged for what it is, a setup book. I know how intoxicatingly dark this series can be, so I am willing to give it another try and read book three. ( )

This book gave me unnecessary stress, mostly in the form of Morpheus. He was so manipulative and frustrating, but by the end I could sort of understand him better...though I really don't like his underhanded ways of getting Alyssa to be with him. It wasn't fair to her or Jeb at all. Hopefully he realizes in the third book that he doesn't have to resort to manipulation to be sure of Alyssa's love.

Other than Morpheus's infuriating ways, the book wasn't bad. I'm a bit apprehensive of the final book, but maybe it'll have Morpheus redeeming himself in my eyes. ( )

Unhinged, the second book in the wildly popular Splintered trilogy by A.G. Howards, is an enjoyable read if you’re in the mood for an Alice in Wonderland inspired novel, but there were instances where I felt rather meh whilst reading it. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the way the story progressed, but the love triangle is starting to become annoying. Of course, the reason for my feeling like this is because I like Morpheus. A lot. He’s just so different, and he doesn’t come across as a poser. Jeb on the other hand … Oh, let’s rather forget he exists. He’s just so needy! The dark magical elements woven into the modern world makes for addictive reading, and I was keen on connecting the dots between the original tale and this adaptation.

In Unhinged, Alyssa doesn’t venture back into Wonderland. Instead, the evil creatures who are set on destroying her comes out of Wonderland to ruin her human life. Queen Red, Alyssa’s great-great-great grandmother wants her crown back, and she’ll stop at nothing. Furthermore, Alyssa’s mother is also keeping secrets … There’s conflict everywhere, folks! And I loved the conflict transpiring between our main protagonist and her parents.

Like I said earlier, I enjoyed the book, regardless of the tropes, but it wasn’t quite as good as Splintered. That said, I’m definitely looking forward to Ensnared, which apparently plays off in a scarier part of Wonderland.

If you’re looking for an Alice in Wonderland adaptation that’s totally different to all the other ones available, I’ll suggest you get your hands on this trilogy. So far, I’m really digging it. ( )
