"Most of us remember (the 1970 Cambodian campaign) best for the killings of four young people at Kent State. Nolan wants us to remember that it killed a lot of young Americans in Cambodia as well." -- The Capital Tittles (Madison, WI)"This is combat narrative at its best. Account of US Army Vietnam maneuver units deployed into Cambodia spring 1970. My unit, 3d Brigade 82 Airborne Division (Separate) had re-deployed to Fort Bragg during November-December 1969, or we would have been in the thick of this operation as well. 3/82 (Golden Brigade) arrived in Vietnam in February 1968 soon after the Tet Offensive and was attached to the 101st Airborne Division in the First Corps Tactical Zone (CTZ) up north near Hue and Phu Bai, but by October 1968 was re-deployed to III CTZ in and around Saigon. The maneurver units discussed in this book are all familiar since 3/82 worked several 'task force' operations with them during 1969: the 9th Infantry Division, 25th Infantry Division, 199th Light Infantry Brigade (Red Catchers), 11 Armored Cavalry Brigade (Black Horse), and 1st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile) AND even some ARVN units. The US 9th ID (Old Reliables) re-deployed back to the States summer 1969 (minus its 3d Brigade which remained in IV CTZ (the Delta). The 25th ID (Tropic Lighting) was based at Cu Chi -- strategically placed between the Cambodian Ho Chi Minh Trail and Saigon. The 199 LIB and 11 ACR worked in and around Bien Hoa (MACV HQ). This incursion into Cambodia to destroy NVA sanctuaries ought ot have happened in early 1969 -- same US forces were in place, but focus was on Paris Peace Talks of Kissinger and Duc Tho. The US had more than a few opportunities to wreak havoc on the NVA in its sanctuaries in Cambodia but sat on the fence instead during 1969. And the war would go on, and on.
