The author had me from the first page. An absolutely, compelling book with characters so real, they seemed to jump off the page and come into the room. This is simply one of the best books I've ever read and should be required reading in schools. Men, women, boys, and girls can all benefit from this fabulous book!

The subjects of incest and spousal abuse are tough to read, but they are a very real part of our society and this author handles them beautifully. I really can't recommend this book highly enough.

From what I understand, "Literary Fiction" focuses more on relationships than action. Even though there's plenty of action in Ripple, I believe the emphasis is more on relationships. We tend to think of the classics as being "Literary Fiction." While this book fits into a number of genres and sub-genres, for me it will always be a benchmark of the best in contemporary "Literary Fiction.:

I really can't recommend this book highly enough. She's a new author and if this is any indication, wow! I can't wait to read her next book,

E L Farris is a fearless writer, and the subject matter really needs to handled in such a way to be real and have impact. And boy does it have an impact! Bare knuckle cage writing. If my emotions were not left in shreds, I felt I had done ten rounds in the ring with Mike Tyson - right alongside the characters in Ripple. I needed to take several timeouts to recover. Some of the creative choices made for the telling of this tale are, in my opinion, nothing short of genius. And there are gems of brilliant insightful writing that will resonate right into the depths of your soul. I believe this book can help people who have suffered rape and abuse. If you read ten thousand books in your life, I can pretty much guarantee you will always remember Ripple. ( )

Ripple deals with the serious topics of incest, rape and child pornography, handled from the perspective of a teenage girl and her absentee mother who is a high powered attorney. It's a good thing when writers aren't afraid to take on the more serious and heart-wrenching topics such as these, and the author did a decent job.

It's a long book, with too much superfluous information and lots of characters. The main characters and dialog are strong, however. The final scene of a main antagonist is incredulous to me, given who he is, which contrasts with the other more realistic aspects of the book. Overall, the story flows well and the author's knowledge of the legal system and psychological dynamics come through. The characters' inner dialog do lend to developing and understanding the issues this book tackles. ( )

The story moves quickly. There is a sense of urgency to not only try to get justice but to help Phoebe. Child sexual abuse has to be a tough topic to write and it certainly is a tough topic to read but if belabored it can overwhelm an audience. In Ripple A Tale of Hope and Redemption Farris takes care to give the reader hope (as stated in the title) that there is a potential end date to the suffering and that the narrative will constantly move toward that end date. There are points in which the hope is perhaps applied with a very heavy hand but with such a challenging topic one has to be careful not to embrace that idea that things will be too shiny and happy too quickly. Farris does seem to sense those moments and pull back in the story.

If you're looking for a book with a good baddie, this is not the one for you. There are times you can tell when an author isn't comfortable with a subject. Alex Kava, in her series, clearly isn't comfortable writing romantic relationships so why do it, you ask? Because it makes the book more marketable. In theory the book is more marketable, in fact the misguided dynamic distracts from a solid story. This is the case with Farris' baddie. He's an extreme contradiction. On the one hand he's a frat boy stereotype who is not the least bit clever and secretive yet the audience is supposed to believe that he poses a serious threat to the characters. It is essential in fiction to suspend disbelief but believing that the bad guy can pull off what he plans whether he does or not in the story may be asking too much.

Overall Ripple A Tale of Hope and Redemption was a solid read. The story is well written and constructed and perfect for fans of stories in which characters overcome great odds. ( )

A busy and successful attorney who is frequently on the road, comes home from a trip to discover her husband, a well respected judge, ,has been drugging and molesting her daughter. And sharing her with his friends. The book describes the renewed bond between parent and child and their journey on the road to recovery. ( )
