I love young love. This book made me happy from start to finish. ( )

The idea of twin sisters was really interesting. I don't know any twins, so I wanted to know more about feelings, views and relationships between Cather and Wren.

But it was very hard for me to go on reading. There wasn't much action, it was more about Cather's reflections, fears and worries. And I am not a fantasy fan, so it was boring for me to read the excerpts of fan-fiction. But I was reading them carefully, because I thought they may be connected to the story somehow. In fact, they weren't:(

Probably, the only thing I liked in this book, was Levi. I really wanted him to be with Cath. He was attracting me since the first episode with him. He seems very kind, smart and calm. And the best part for me in young adult books is when the main heroes start falling in love. That moments are sooo cute. Only because of this story line I gave the book 3 stars. ( )

I really did like this book, though I am leaving off a last star because I appreciate what the ending set out to say as "a moral tale of fixation toward growth" but I found it cheap as a woman and a fiction writer. I don't feel like there had to be this growing-up, out-growing, putting off promises to a nameless, faceless population of people for other things in college and boyfriend land. I don't think the promises made to those people are any less or more than the ones you make in real life -- equal in your word, unless you're word is just less in that realm than you'd ever consider it face-to-face with someone.

But that aside -- I liked the rest of the book so much.

I loved Cath and Wren, and their entire growth apart and back together. I love their entire differences with how to handle each other, their father, and the return of their mother, who wants to be back without ever really being back. I love the introduction of other friends, and how each takes to them fast or slow. I love the differing love interests of both, how they are portrayed and shown. I love how the chapters are divided by pieces of "actual canon" Simon Snow from the real author, and then bits of "fiction" from first Cath & Wren and then from mainly Cath, herself, writing the last story.

I would definitely advise it to people who know the term, and fandom, and who get out of it much what someone like me, who has been immersed in all of the above for nearly two decades, did. ( )

Everyone seems to enjoy this book a lot, so I’m not sure why I didn’t like it so much.
Despite the story dealing with anxiety, tumultuous sibling relationship and parental issues, it’s still a light read and the writing style is very easy. I loved the idea of Cath being so involved in the fandom and the small snippets of Simon’s story. Ofcourse, I wasn’t very surprised by it all because I read Carry On first.
But I never really connected with any of the characters. The twins relationship with their dad seemed the most genuine for me. The love story of Cath and Levi also didn’t really interest me much. I just can’t pinpoint what it is about the book that felt lacking but it didn’t connect with me emotionally. But I can definitely understand it’s appeal. ( )

Oh, such a problematic book to review! On one hand, I loved it. I loved the characters and the love story and the way the author works in so many pop culture touchstones of the past decade or so in such a funny way. On the other, there are ways that it just doesn't work, and it's the weakest of the three books by Rainbow Rowell that I've read since July (Obviously, I like her writing!).

I hate writing plot summaries, but to give some basic background: the main character, Cath, and her twin sister, Wren, are popular writers of online fan-fiction based on a very Harry Potter-esque book series. Rowell intersperses chapters about Cath with excerpts from Cath's fan-fiction as well as excerpts from the books that her fan-fiction is supposed to be based on. Even though Rowell places all of these excerpts strategically and with an end in mind, I found them irritating, and just whizzed through them so I could get back to the main story. It seems to me that anyone who isn't already familiar with the world of fan-fiction will be totally confused by this structure. I AM familiar with fan-fiction, but the mix here didn't work for me. It did serve, though, as an interesting vehicle for Cath and her professor to discuss compelling questions about writing, creativity, and what fan-fiction is and is not.

Then there's a question that's probably only of interest to librarians and booksellers, about where this book belongs. My library hasn't ordered it yet, and I think it's being marketed as Young Adult, but the main characters are 18-21, which makes it fall more in the genre that many are now calling New Adult. But, since New Adult is also often associated with more explicit sex scenes than Young Adult fiction generally has, and there's a very sweet, soft-pedal approach to sex here, it doesn't really fit there either. It doesn't have to fit anywhere, of course, but it's something I wondered about as I read.

So, a mixed bag, all in all. I haven't read any reviews yet, and am interested to. I'd say it definitely won't fall into that "crossover appeal" category that many Young Adult novels of the past few years have. The market here is mostly under-25, and for some in that demographic the mish mash of fan-fiction and regular fiction may be a thrill. Me? I'd rather she had just stuck with the main story, but am still glad I read it. ( )
