There are a lot of good things to say about Two serpents rise. Like its prequel, , it has an original world mixing magic with law. Before I started I was a bit worried about the characters, though. Three parts dead stands out because of its unapologetically competent female characters and its absolute lack of misogyny. The protagonist of Two serpents rise is male, though. I need not have worried. Yes, he is male, but he has a female friend (who is lesbian!), a female boss (who admittedly doesn't play a large role, but still.) and a girlfriend who is more powerful and more competent than he is. And he doesn't care! That is the admirable part to me, Caleb has no problem with women who are stronger than he is, or with getting help from women. On one occasion his (female) friend needs to help him climb a set of stairs, and there is not even an inkling of male pride on anyone's part; not on Caleb's, but also not on the part of his macho father. A little later, Caleb is perfectly happy to distract someone so that his friend can make a deciding move. Of course, some people may frown about Caleb's girlfriend turning out to be on opposite sides of him. Still, she is not the inevitably evil female with power; she is not evil at all. She sees that there is something wrong with the world, and she tries to fix it in a way she feels can work. She is not the only one in that; Caleb's father resorts to the same type of terrorist means. If you take only this book, sure you could make a case for the only really powerful women being evil; considering Three parts dead, though, I really don't thinkt that's how it's meant. Ultimately, I'd say the one way in which Caleb is superior to his girlfriend is that he is adamant that there are certain things he will not do, and that he tries to look for further solutions because of that. In this case it works, but Caleb risks a lot for his convictions.
Another plus of this book is that it has a South-American setting and that most of the characters are therefore not white.

So why am I not giving this more stars? It's just that for the first half of the book, I had some real trouble reading the descriptions. Perhaps they were too dense, I'm not sure, but I had to read them two or three times to make sure I wasn't missing something important. So I didn't think this was easy to read, because the first half had quite a few descriptions... (

This second installment in the craft sequence wasn’t nearly as interesting as the first. I think I just wasn’t very interested in Caleb as a character and I thought his infatuation with Mal was silly. And I kept thinking that it was awfully convenient the way things were working out in the plot. This is unfortunate because the city and the serpents and the whole plot with the water supply poisoned repeatedly by demons were interesting. I hope the next book is more my cup of tea. (

I liked almost all of this story except for the romance, which is probably why I enjoyed Three Parts Dead more. I read this before Last First Snow, and I wonder if that messed up my understanding of things.

Still an interesting world - I forgive many of the faults just for the story and magic being cool. I really enjoy all of the female characters. I liked the rules twist near the end; it was an interesting interpretation!

I'd prefer 3.5 stars because I liked this more than Last First Snow (I think). (

I saw some seams in this book: the gay characters wear it as sort of a medal, the sport of cliff running didn't do much for me, the King in Red is turned on and off at authorial will. But it gave me lots of things I like: adventure, genuine moral conflict, a new way to look at the experience of environmental depredation. The characters are consistent and distinctly motivated.
Boy that doesn't sound very fun but I appreciate the craft that went into the writing, if you will. Looking forward to the 3rd installment.
