graphic nonfiction. (I made it to page 262.) with very little knowledge of Japanese history, I just feel like I'm missing a lot. Definitely not a stand-in for a textbook, but I could see the value of supplementing texts with Mizuki's work. (

The author does a good job of condensing a complicated history into the manga format without sacrificing much nuance. I wish there was a bit more background on the invasion of China, but I understand there are length and breadth considerations. It's already a hefty volume. (

Was not quite able to get through, but this is a fascinating way to get through some Japanese history, in this case the era of emperor Hirohito. (
