In this story Pete has to overcome his fear of the water at the beach. He watches his brother have fun but is too afraid to join him in the water. His mother tries to make him feel better at first until she is able to gently coax him into the water. Many children are afraid of something at some point in their lives and I think that remembering how much Pete enjoyed the water after overcoming his fear could be a useful tool to helping children overcome their minor fears as well. I gave this guided reading book a 5/5 because the story is very well done and the topics are those that students will most likely already have background knowledge on, but if not the teacher can provide this to the students. This book has great illustrations to support the text, that the students can also utilize when doing a picture walk before the guided reading and throughout the reading to help them figure out words they may not know. This book also utilizes word patterns as well that can help the reader. This book specifically is about the beach and the problem is that Pete is afraid of the water. The students will be able to connect to this if they are afraid of the water or if they have a cat that is afraid of the water. This book sends the message that you can overcome your fears, which is a good message for students. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

Instead of going in the water, Pete builds a sandcastle, but a big wave rolls over it and the castle is gone. So Pete takes a walk with his mother; they find seashells, they see a crab. Pete’s feet get wet; the water makes them feel cool, but the rest of Pete is hot.
It is time for lunch. Bob is wet and cool, but Pete is hot. He eats his sandwich and drinks his lemonade. Pete asks Bob to play ball, but Bob wants to go surfing again, so Pete plays catch with his mom.
What will Pete do when his mom says they should get their feet wet in the water?

In this story, young children will see that it’s okay to be afraid and will see Pete dealing with his fear of going into the water.
This I Can Read book uses basic language, word repetition, and illustrations to help young emergent readers find success in reading. As with all My First books in this series, this is a book designed for shared reading with the young reader and an adult.
Delightful illustrations, a well-known and beloved character young readers will instantly recognize, and a clever story all work together to make this a perfect early reader selection.
Highly recommended, especially for fans of Pete the Cat. ( )
