In her kitchen, Christine Ha possesses a rare ingredient that most professionally-trained chefs never learn to use- the ability to cook by sense. After tragically losing her sight in her twenties, this remarkable home cook, who specializes in the mouthwatering, wildly popular Vietnamese comfort foods of her childhood, as well as beloved American standards that she came to love growing up in Texas, re-learned how to cook. Using her heightened senses, she turns out dishes that are remarkably delicious, accessible, luscious, and crave-worthy. Millions of viewers tuned in to watch Christine sweep the thrilling MasterChef Season 3 finale, and here they can find more of her deftly crafted recipes. They'll discover food that speaks to the best of both the Vietnamese diaspora and American classics, personable tips on how to re-create delicious professional recipes in a home kitchen, and an inspirational personal narrative bolstered by Ha's background as a gifted writer. Recipes from My Home Kitchen will braid together Christine's story with her food for a result that is one of the most compelling culinary tales of her generation.… (mer)

3.5 rounded up to 4. I haven't watched Master Chef so I'm missing the context of challenges. Once again, am reading cookbooks without trying them (though I've been meaning to make oatmeal cookies anyway so I'll probably do those later this week and will update accordingly).

I didn't realize Christine was blind! The biographic notes in between and within recipes are well done. It was an interesting choice to have the Vietnamese/Thai/etc dish names alongside an English translation (pad see ew is referred to as "soy sauce stir-fried noodles") and i wonder if that's because they thought readers/Master Chef fans needed extra context/familiarity? Recipes From My Home Kitchen by Christine Ha
4 stars

Christine Ha was the winner of MasterChef season 3, a Gordon Ramsey show. She competed against 99 other contestants to earn her place in the MasterChef kitchen. And she is blind! Yes, Christine has an amazing palate and created her dishes without sight. Her cookbook is a reflection of her Vietnamese heritage and American favorites. I borrowed this book from the library, but it is still on my Amazon wishlist. I haven't tried any of the recipes, but many look good. My first will probably be Pad See Ew (Soy Sauce Stir-Fried Noodles) when I can find some Chinese broccoli. Thit Kho Trung (Braised Pork Belly with Egg), Kare-Kare (Peanut Butter Oxtail Stew) and My Mama's Egg Rolls are high on my list of want-to-try. However, while my interests are in the Asian side of her cooking, she also provides yummy sounding recipes from growing up in the south, Peach Sweet Tea, Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Dark Chocolate Fudge Brownies. The pictures are bright and you learn a lot about Chistine's youth and her relationship with her mother. All in all, I may still hit that "Buy with 1-click button" on Amazon. ( )
