In 1942 Paris, architect Lucien Bernard accepts a commission that will bring him a great deal of money-- and maybe get him killed. All he has to do is design a secret hiding place for a wealthy Jewish man, a space so invisible that even the most determined German officer won't find it. He sorely needs the money, and outwitting the Nazis who have occupied his beloved city is a challenge he can't resist. When one of his hiding spaces fails horribly, and the problem of where to hide a Jew becomes terribly personal, Lucien can no longer ignore what's at stake.… (mer)

Undeservedly low ratings on Goodreads. In 1942 Paris, gifted architect Lucien Bernard is leading double lives: a dull, loveless marriage while having an affair with a famous designer and accepting commissions from a Christian to design hiding places for Jews and to design factories for the Nazis. Living in terror, Lucien is afraid of the Gestapo (for helping Jews) as well as the resistance (for helping the German war effort), even though Lucien rationalizes his work as benefiting a post-war France. Lucien eventually adopts a 12-year old orphan boy, finding an outlet for his love. Heart warming story, including his spiritual bond with the German architect in charge of building the factories. ( )

A good idea with an over simplified narrative. It does manage tension, but "the average guy becomes the hero and gets not the pretty girl, but the prettiest" doesn't do the premise justice. ( )

I shared at the beginning of my recent review of "Those Who Save Us" by Jenna Blum that I have read many novels about different aspects of WWII and the Holocaust. However, not since reading "The Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank when I was in grade school have I been able to imagine so clearly and felt so deeply the sheer terror of Gestapo boots pounding through an apartment or home and in one's isolation in a hiding space wondering if the space is safe enough from discovery. Lucien Bernard is an architect in Paris in 1924, and his story is one that becomes more mesmerizing with each page read.

As individuals that have experience and expertise in a particular field become authors the passion for their field of choice and their real life experiences bring an understanding and intimate knowledge that permeates every story crafted, heightens setting and scene descriptions, and adds a realism to each conversation of the character that represents that field. After reading "The Paris Architect" I was not surprised to learn that Charles Belfoure is an architect and specifically that he practices historic preservation as both an architect and consultant. I look forward to reading Mr. Belfoure's second novel, "House of Thieves." ( )

Lucien Bernard, an architect and a virulent anti-Semite living and working in Paris during the Occupation, is moved by his greed, vanity and ambition to design hides for Jews.
Lucien, although he has a reputation for integrity, is not a brave man. Realizing that his designs put him in dire danger, he has a nearly debilitating fear of arrest and torture by the Gestapo. Unbeknown to him, he has two Gestapo agents already in his life; Hermut Schlegal, who shares (also unbeknown to him) his mistress, the fashion designer, Adele Bonneau; and his newly hired draftsman, Alain Girardet, nephew of Hermann Hotweig who a Gestapo agent working for Schlegal.
The Paris Architect is a well written, thrilling novel. The architectural details are clearly and interestingly presented.
