Generation versus generation, traditional versus contemporary, these men are about to learn a lesson in architecture and love. Can they prove that the old and new can be the perfect design? A successful New York architect, Thomas Elkin almost has it all. Coming out as gay and ending his marriage before his fortieth birthday, he needed to start living his life. Now, four years later, with his relationship with his son back on track, and after a few short-lived romances, this esteemed traditional draftsman thinks he knows everything about architecture, about life. Cooper Jones, twenty-two years old, is about to take the architect world by storm. Talented, professional, driven and completely infuriating, Cooper is the definition of Generation Y. Starting an internship working with Thomas, Cooper is about to knock Tom's world off its axis. Tom can teach Cooper about the architecture industry, but Cooper is about to teach Tom what it means to live.… (mer)

I'm in awe of NR Walker. A lot of people like novels that teach them about history, geographical place, other's lifestyles... something that enriches their knowledge and experience of the world.

I find that Walker's romance novels always give me that experience, which is a bonus on top of what is already a masterful romance.

I loved the way she portrays the romantic trope of older guy falling for younger guy in this novel - full of fun. The two characters are always talking and laughing! The "mature" man, Tom Elkin, hasn't laughed much for years. He is completely renewed by the interest shown in him by the 22-year-old Cooper. And there are many jokes around age, all meant in good fun.

Hence the word "retrofit". I should have written down the wonderful moment when Tom describes Cooper's impact on him as having been retrofitted (they are both architects, so it fits in that sense too). It is the perfect description. And wow! it's exactly what everyone wishes for, in meeting a new person, even if it isn't a romantic liaison. But here Cooper shakes up Tom's life and definitely makes it better.

...

Thank you AddictedReader28 - great review. I'm so glad you posted those comments about the novella - I'm on the same page. But I agree - this baby novel smashes any such concerns. ( )

E Tom rientrava appieno in quella descrizione.

I never, ever, ever read novellas. Okay, maybe I read a few, but usually the minute I see a page count of less than a hundred I don't even bother reading the book's description. "Next!" I yell and move on to the next book.

God, I'm an idiot.

I've breezed by this book so many times, each time skipping it because of the length and also the fact that it's a series that follows the same couple (I don't like those kinds of series either). But it's in my Oyster library and with them going out of business next month the thrifty reader in me is gobbling up as much as I can. [b:Elements of Retrofit|17901475|Elements of Retrofit (Thomas Elkin, #1)|N.R. My main issue with short romance books is the fact that unless the couple has some type of history already established prior to when the story begins, a novella just does not give a writer enough time to make me believe in the main characters' romantic connection. Honestly, sitting here now, I can't think of one novella I have read that, unless the main characters already had a shared history, did not fall into the realm of insta-love.

Until now.

God, could these guys get any better? Actually, could this writer get any better? Not only was she able to give me a novella free of insta-love and all its creepiness, but she maneuvered the whole secret-romance mine field without turning it into an angst filled farce. And speaking of angst, I really hate it. My mind has a hard time viewing "angst-filled stories" as anything other than platforms for whining characters or excuses for unnecessary and manufactured conflict. I just don't understand the current popularity of angsty (yeah, I like to make up words) books. But back on topic, the general lack of angst was a refreshing discovery. Considering we have a story consisting of main characters with a considerable age difference with a budding workplace relationship that could be a career killer, this book could have easily embraced angst. I'm so glad it didn't.

And the sex scenes. Yowza ( )

Took a chance on a book out of my norm (M/M is simply not what I've read much of) with an author new to me. A straightforward read. The age difference didn't affect me one iota, but the age-of-my-son realization that bothered Tom also bothered me, until Cooper made it a non-issue for both Tom and me. All in all, a good read! ( )
