This was a reread for me and I tried the audio version this time around through KU for free. I skipped a lot because I remembered more than I thought I would which was nice.

The story is a take on the action/adventure with a good dose of genocidal maniacs thrown in. It uses secret societies, genetics, and makes a connection to autism through scientific treatment and discoveries. There are great action sequences that could have some readers rolling their eyes at the audacity but if you're prepared to go full into it, it's fun.

The characters are intelligent and feel like they're modeled after actual humans in the field. The male protagonist is quick-witted and asks questions that the reader might be thinking too. He isn't written as a macho "I can do it all" kind of character but has real issues and works through his training. The female protagonist is very intelligent, snarky, witty, and her reactions to being thrust into industrial espionage is how a reader might react.

The way the story is structured as a third-person narrative and will swing between each character's specific POV for each chapter. This allows for a very rounded approach to the plot as a whole. The action can be over the top but again, it's fiction so suspend belief.

I'd recommend this book for readers who have some experience with both light science-fiction and action/adventure.

This was an interesting story, with a mix of unique technologies, a long cast of characters and ties into Atlantis mythology or legend. There were several exciting parts where I did not want to put the book down. It had many battles/struggles between good and evil, and times where you were not sure which was which. The story took so many interesting turns and twists, often very unexpected. And parts of this story were all over the globe. For the most part, I really enjoyed reading this book. That being said, I got frustrated at several points trying to keep the characters straight. It is very hard to explain that without saying too much about the story. All in all, I enjoyed this book. I'm about to buy the next one in the series because I really do want to see where this goes next. ( )

There's no question this was an absorbing story. It's a real page-turner.

Unfortunately, when I reached the end of the book, I could not turn any more pages, so I was forced to think about what I had just read. And that's when the book started to feel more hollow. Did this really make sense? And, perhaps more importantly, do I really care about these people enough to bother to pick up the next volume? I'm still not sure (I haven't picked up the next volume, and it's a couple of months later now).

I am not a fan of end-of-the-world disaster stories, so that aspect of the ending put me off. Others who do not share my cordial dislike of the collapse of society, heaps of dead, and return to barbarism might not find this so off-putting. ( )

I didn't care for the writing style. It felt more like reading a screenplay than a book. Somehow I was able to push through and fortunately it got better as it went along, but things went south again when it used weak time dilation to service the plot. How convenient. ( )

It started off as a fast paced action story, but tapered off quickly. The plot elements became way to cliche (nazis, love triangles, explosion countdown). The book comes across as an action movie script, reworked into a book. I’d personally like to watch that movie, but the book suffers for this decision. ( )
