"Kevin Ryan is a writer in the much-maligned genre of true crime who desperately needs a devious, over-the-top story for the subject of his next book. How else can he keep his wife Valerie's roots dyed and keep himself from handing out taco samples at the local supermarket? When Kevin isn't Googling himself or spot checking his books' stock at stores around the country or online, he's bringing the hazards (ie, criminals and other crazies) of his job home to wife Val and twin daughters Taylor and Hayley. Kevin is on the hunt for the big one, the story that could break him out of the mid-list and onto the bestseller lists."--P. [4] of cover."--P. [4] of cover.… (mer)

An entertaining story about an almost famous true-crime novelist who becomes personally involved in one of his own books, and proving to him that the truth can be stranger than fiction.

Kevin Ryan is an up and coming true- crime novelist, at least in his mind he is. He has yet to find that one big story to put him over the top, and his wife Valerie is struggling to support their twin 12 year old daughters, Hayley and Taylor, as well as Kevin on her salary alone. With their credit cards maxed out, the day of reckoning is coming when Kevin will have to get a job to help with their living expenses and give up being a full-time writer. He scours the internet for crimes in the news daily and is beginning to lose hope when his big break comes knocking on his door. Literally knocking on his door.

Jett Carter strokes his ego, telling Kevin that her family is huge fans of his books. Jett's mother Connie and sister Janet are currently in jail, convicted of attempted murder, and she's sure if Kevin writes their story, they may have a chance of getting out. Kevin likes what he hears: a love triangle turned bad; a mother implicated in conspiracy, and two men (the shooter and the victim) still in love with Janet. Kevin's publisher and the talk shows love it because no one was actually killed yet people were still hurt and hurting. It seems like a win for all involved, so Kevin agrees to write the story, calling it "Love Me to Death."

But no sooner does Kevin begin, people start turning up dead. The president of his fan club has a mysterious heart attack on her way to a meeting with him. Kevin finds the body of one of the ancillary characters as he arrives to interview her, making him a person of interest in the murder. In fact, the more Kevin digs into the story, the more he believes one of the principals is trying to frame him. When his family gets involved in the madness, Kevin is in too deep to get out. Then his only course of action is to fight for their lives.

A somewhat predictable plot in which an author becomes entangled with a deranged fan, along the lines of Stephen King's "Misery." I'm sure the plot has been done several times before and since, but I liked Gregg Olsen's delivery. He never lets the mood get too dark, usually finding humor in something to lighten the tension. This is the first of his books I've read and I think I will read more by him, maybe even one of his "true" true-crime novels. ( )
