400 pages? Pick it up around midnight? Sure! Let's just read it straight though!

[b:Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened|17571564|Hyperbole and a Half Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened|Allie Brosh|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1409522492l/17571564._SY75_.jpg|24510592] is based on the blog of the same name and appears to be essentially a printing of a number of stories that have appeared there (although Menace was published after the book and is thus missing, give it a read, it's hilarious).

It's essentially a series of slice of life stories, describing the titular Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened. Allie Brosh is a bit screwed up, but honestly, that's okay.

Nobody can guarantee that it's going to be okay, but - and I don't know if this will be comforting to anyone else - the possibility exists that there's a piece of corn on a floor somewhere that will make you just as confused about why you were laughing as you have ever been about why you are depressed.

It makes perfect sense in context. I promise.

Well. Slightly more sense.

She's certainly got a rather dry, cynical, absolutely ridiculous view of the world that I identify with all too much. And it's funny. Sometimes in direct ways, sometimes surreal, sometimes in those ways that will hit you hours after you're done reading.

No one could tell me not to eat an entire cake—not my mom, not Santa, not God—no one. It was my cake and everyone else could go fuck themselves.

Spoilers: She ate the cake.

Check it out, either the book or the blog. You'll figure out right quick if you'll love it or not.

Allie Brosh is hilarious and I love her honesty about mental illness, but also keeping it light. Her drawings are great despite being stick figures and I could read a whole book just about simple dog and helper. ( )

Currently the funniest thing I've ever seen. I adore it and want to own five copies, one for each room of my house so I can pick it up whenever I want and just hold it to my chest. ( )

Author and illustrator Allie Brosh captivates the reader immediately in this graphic novel memoir. Her comic artwork is a strangely riveting mix of childish, funny, and poignant. She begins with chuckle-worthy commentary on her childhood and her dog. Convinced that her dog has mental issues, Brosh adopts a second dog to “help” the first one. The solution is a flop and a subsequent chapter is titled, “The Helper Dog is an Asshole.” Hyperbole and a Half is more than just laughs, however. Brosh’s comic illustrations and writing are raw in style and emotion. She plumbs the depths of her episodes of depression with a detachment that allows her to show the humor in her paralysis and flawed coping strategies. In illustrating weeks of exhausting time and effort spent in simply deciding whether to return an overdue DVD, she supplies the reader with both opportunity for introspection and fodder for amusement. Allie Brosh’s book may be the most accessible depiction of life with depression. It’s certainly the funniest. ( )

I think that the best stories were toward the beginning. The book slowly stalled, and eventually ended on a whimper, without much of a conclusion. Most of the funny stories were from Brosh's childhood, and perhaps these were the most exaggerated. I still wish more of the stories were more up-to-date.

> I’m legitimately terrified that someday, someone I love is actually going to need a kidney. I’d like to say this fear stems from concern over the health of my loved ones, but it’s mostly because I don’t want to find out how I would react to someone needing one of my kidneys.

> Prehistoric Crazy-Bus Death Ride was just smashing a toy bus full of dinosaurs into the wall while feeling sort of bored and unfulfilled. I could no longer connect to my toys in a way that allowed me to participate in the experience. … The second half of my depression felt almost exactly like that, except about everything. ( )

Brosh has an odd way of looking at the world and an uncanny ability to write about her personal — and specific — circumstances so that those of us who are even more odd can identify. ... Think of Brosh as a visceral, brutally honest David Sedaris — with badly drawn images — and buy this book.

It would be easy to dismiss Brosh as unnecessarily self-deprecating. But it seems that it’s the sheer intensity of her critical self-consciousness and conscious self-criticalness that people have connected with so deeply. By revealing the selfish grotesqueness of everyday humanity, the stories encourage us to become more reflexive of our inherent flaws, which can be both productive and humbling. And also, it would be nothing short of ironic to criticise Brosh for her almost complete lack of subtlety when the premise of the book is embedded right there in the title: it’s all about hyperbole.
