Compared to the original trilogy, both Clariel the book and Cariel the character have a rather different feel.

As a book, Clariel takes place centuries before Sabriel, well before the fall of the Old Kingdom. We're in an entirely different political landscape and rather than the general feeling of things coming back together (other than the whole end of the world thing), there's a feel of falling apart. We're square in the height of decadence that comes before the fall, with a failing monarchy, an Abhorsen who'd rather hunt than deal in death, and Charter Magic fallen out of fasion. It's an interesting time period to explore, don't get me wrong. It's just rather different.

As a character, Clariel wants nothing more than to go back home. She doesn't care about the private schools and political maneuvering of the capital, she doesn't care about her parent's lives in the guild. It's a definite switch from Sabriel and Lireal, who are thrown into just as unusual situations and grow to match them. It's interesting finally getting a point of view character with the Royal / Touchstone's powers and learn a bit more about those.

For the first chunk of the book, I didn't care much for Clariel on the world. I understand where she's coming from, it just wasn't that interesting to read about. But once the fighting begins and things start escalating, it's a fascinating ride, watching Clariel make a series of perfectly reasonable--at the time--choices. And then when you finally realize that Clariel is an origin story for Chlorr of the Mask. Well, I managed not to spoil that one for myself, so that was quite a surprise.

Overall, it's an odd little book. Not nearly as solid as the first trilogy, I did appreciate the additional world building and backstory. The sort of thing I never knew I wanted, but was nice to have when I did. ( )

I was delighted to find that there were a couple more books set in Garth Nix's Old Kingdom and that this one was set during the 'olden days' when Belisaere was the bustling hub, complete with palace and dying king. Clariel's parents have moved the family there from the countryside as Clariel's mother is being made head of the Goldsmith's Guild, but Clariel just wants to get back to the forest and be a Borderer. Clariel's single-minded focus on this goal is a headache to her parents as well as everyone else around her, particularly since there seems to be some intrigue amongst the Guilds that's centered around making Clariel a politically beneficial marriage.
Since this is a prequel that was published well after the first series, it might make sense if you are a new reader to read this first. I can't recall anything in this book that is enhanced by knowledge of the original trilogy, but there were several parts of the first books that I wanted to go back and read with this new knowledge. We waited so long for this book to finally be released, and I am happy to say that it did not disappoint. The Old Kingdom is such a wonderful setting, and Nix's mastery of world building is put to good use in this story. The other novels, which are set in "modern" times, give us a great depiction of the three separate groups of people who built/tamed Charter Magic and unified the Kingdom (the Abhorsen's, the Clayr, and the Royals), but Clariel's story really gives us a depiction of how these families were before they became splintered from each other and the Old Kingdom became quite chaotic without their active influence.

Clariel as a protagonist is a bit younger than Nix's other leading ladies, so I found her to be a little more distant than I expected. A lot of her behavior is rash and caused by her inexperience in reality and desperation to escape from her potential closeted life, which is further fueled by her inherited beserker nature. Having her parents die partway through the story, while not having a good relationship with them throughout her life (or with many other people for that matter), doesn't leave her many options, so I was not surprised when her frantic need for escape turned into a stubborn determination to get revenge in addition to escaping to a life in the woods.

Nix sets up quite a few more interesting characters throughout the story, so I wouldn't be surprised if he continued writing another group of books loosely based on intertwining story lines. The new Abhorsen, Clariel's young but determined cousin Bel, and the newly returned princess could definitely be interesting characters to explore. And of course, there's always the intriguing Moggot! ( )

This took months to finish. The first half was incredibly slow and I kept having to force myself to not put it in the DNF pile. The last half was good especially the Mogget parts. Not my favorite Old Kingdom book for sure. ( )
