Before there was hip hop, there was DJ Kool Herc. On a hot day at the end of summer in 1973 Cindy Campbell threw a back-to-school party at a park in the South Bronx. Her brother, Clive Campbell, spun the records. He had a new way of playing the music to make the breaks the musical interludes between verses longer for dancing. He called himself DJ Kool Herc and this is When the Beat Was Born. From his childhood in Jamaica to his youth in the Bronx, Laban Carrick Hill's book tells how Kool Herc came to be a DJ, how kids in gangs stopped fighting in order to breakdance, and how the music he invented went on to define a culture and transform the world.… (mer)

“When the Beat was Born”, was about a little boy named Clive who loved music. He was inspired by a famous Dj from Jamaica. Although Clive moved from Jamaica to New York, he never lost his love for music. As Clive began to Dj when he got older, he created a sound that was unique. He created a sound based on the dancers dancing during breaks in the songs. Through his unique style of music the term break dancers or b-boys were created. ( )

This book is a great use for upper elementary students that want to learn more about different cultures. This book tells the life of DJ Kool Herc and how as a young boy he moved from his home country of Jamaica to New York and how he had to make a life for himself and he does that by music and hip-hop culture. However, the illustrations were detailed and extremely creative. I think this book would be great use in the classroom because it can also help students see if you work hard and put your mind to something they can be successful even if it is not on the first attempt. I enjoyed reading this book as it inspired me and gave me an eye opening to other cultures. ( )

This book gives a wonderful look at the story of DJ Kool Herc and how he founded/invented Hip Hop and how his creativity made it happen. You don't often see Hip Hop used in children's books, so I was overjoyed to see this one. You get to see how he created todays most listened to genre in music. From his roots in Jamaica, to his ascendance in the Bronx. I really like how they show case the how DJ-ing, break dancing, and Rapping/MC-ing came to be and what formed them. There are examples of some of the rhymes the "Herculoids" used at the parties they preformed at. The illustrations are amazing and give great representation to the Hip Hop community and its history. The book shows how creativity and ingenuity can be used ti make something great. I think a lot of children would love this book and connect with it. ( )
