 Overall, the editors and contributors should be proud of this compilation, which illustrates the enormous mass of current scholarship. Everyone will not agree with all of the contributors’ conclusions, but they do not all necessarily agree with one another. Surely this is a symptom of the ferment in the field and the need for bibliographic guides such as those in in part 1. It is unfortunate that the work’s price will likely be a barrier to students’ access to part 1 as an overall general guide except at the select institutions that see fit to acquire it, or for those few undergraduates with the foresight and time to request general reference volumes through interlibrary loan. While these two volumes will undoubtedly interest all those seeking to learn more about war and warfare during Late Antiquity, and I doubt that there is anyone who will not learn something new by reading the set, the fact remains that the dominant subject within both volumes is that of fortifications. Hence this set will be of most interest to those seeking an introduction to the subject of fortifications and defensive systems during Late Antiquity. Indeed, one could easily re-assemble most of the essays here to produce the larger part of a very good book on this subject. Ingår i serien
This two-volume publication explores the key factors determining the course and outcome of war in Late Antiquity. Volume 8.1 includes a detailed review of strategic and tactical issues and eight comprehensive bibliographic essays, which provide an overview of the literature. In Volume 8.2, thematic papers examine strategy and intelligence, fortifications and siege warfare, weaponry and equipment, literary sources and topography, and civil war, while papers focused on particular geographic regions home in on war and warfare in the West Roman Empire in the 4th and 5th centuries, and the Balkans and the Eastern frontier in the 4th to 7th centuries AD.
