Longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. Selected as an Amazon.ca Best Book. October 1970. Two kidnappings. One dead. A crisis unlike anything the country had ever seen -- here is the story behind history... Thirty years after the October Crisis, Sam Nihilo, a freelance writer whose career is in a slump, is drawn to the conspiracy theories that have proliferated in the wake of the events. While investigating the death of one of the FLQ hostages, Nihilo sees his life consumed by an inquiry that leads him further into a flurry of facts, both known and newly discovered. Soon, secret agents, corrupt police officers, politicians, and former terrorists of the Front de Libération du Québec form a mysterious constellation around him, and at the centre lies a complicated and dangerous truth. In the tradition of Don DeLillo's Libra, October 1970 is a thrilling fictional account of the events that shaped one of the most volatile moments in recent history.… (mer)

This is a very powerful and complex novel. It is a fictionalized account of Canada's "October Crisis" when separatist terrorists kidnapped two people, killing one of them. In this novel, Mr. Hamelin takes us into the backstories of the main characters, as well as devleoping a plot involving international connections and multiple motivations.

The story is told in short chapters, and jumps around in time and in voice. It's main focus is on the FLQ members and sympathisers, with not much said about the political decisions made in Ottawa and Quebec City. I was sometimes confused, and reverted to the list of characters provided at the front of the book several times. But I am glad I stuck with it as the story drew me in ever deeper. Fascinating, plausible...it brings a different perspective to the events of October, 1970. ( )

The October Crisis of 1970 was a tumultuous time in Quebec, and this novel explores the fallout involving characters who had a hand in the crisis, as well as delving into their pasts to learn how they came to be who they are. The novel swirls around in time, which is kind of disorienting but is the sort of thing where you just have to let go and trust that things will be explained eventually.

That said, however, I stopped reading on page 88, because while I thought this was an interesting idea, I didn't 500-page-like the idea. At least not at this time (December 2013). This book is recommended for people with longer attention spans than mine.
