Based on a true story about a young Kenyan boy whose mother left him but had named him Muthini which meant suffering because he was born with no fingers on his left hand and only two on his right. Many times he was made fun of or avoided which hurt him deeply. He lives with his very elderly grandmother, his Nyanya, along with many cousins whose parents had either died or left them. They are extremely poor and there is never enough money or food, but plenty of love. A difficult choice must be made and Muthini is the youngest child and needs to have a better chance in life, so his Nyanya takes him to an orphanage where he is blessed and his name is changed to Baraka which means blessing for he was a blessing just as his grandmother always knew.… (mer)

These books are both excellent promotional vehicles for a charitable orphanage in Kenya, and lovely biographical works about the children who live there. Simple stories with a profound kindness and impact, that do a beautiful job of showing how children in this part of Africa live. Neither cloying, nor pitying, and full of hope. ( )

This book is very good and I liked it alot. I think the plot was a little too fast and would have liked the book to either be longer or the book to be split up into two seperate books. The characters are build well and the author gives goood background information. The pictures are very well drawn and go along with the story well. The langauge is very appropriate for young learners and I think reader of many ages would enjoy reading this book ( )

Based on the life of a boy in Kenya, this story with beautiful paintings in acrylic, provides us perspective in how certain things in life we take them from granted. In hard times where food is not evident, this little boy who is missing some fingers, is taken to an orphanage by his grandmother who believes the child will be there receiving better care. It is this way, that the boy from being called "Suffering", became "Blessing". A multicultural story that show us how life is in some parts of Africa.
