I received Buyographics: How Demographic and Economic Changes Will Reinvent the Way Marketers Reach Consumers a long time ago via the LibraryThing Early Reviewers giveaway. This is another book where I have no idea why it was thought that I’d like it. I’m only writing this review to get it out of my queue.

This book through the examples of ten different representative families show how demographic changes affect the purchasing decisions of consumers. They do show how the changes in society today affect how marketers market their product to different target audience. The country is broken down into different types of communities. This is a good book for those in marketing in how to address their target audience. ( )

I received this book as part of the Early Reviewers. Anyway, as someone who has read several books about marketing and demographics, I didn't particularly find anything in this book new or enlightening. Still, it was an interesting enough peek into indepth buying habits of a cross-section of the United States but, honestly, I would have liked to have read more case studies to draw bigger conclusions from. Meh. ( )

Buyographics is a very savvy marketing book that spots new trends with the help of demographic analysis. The purpose of the book is to help advertisers develop campaigns to sell product to new markets, ie Gen X, Millenials, and "iGens." But it also has much that is relevant to any institution that wants to influence the public. I especially liked his real world composite people who he used to demonstrate his business examples. An interesting and enjoyable read. ( )

Buyographics is a book for marketers about current demographic shifts in America, and how it is getting harder and harder to reach intended audiences. Gone are the days when marketers can play a commercial or take out an ad in the newspaper and be done with it.

Baby boomers are delaying retirement, millenials are delaying life stages by getting married and having kids later, and all of us are trying to recover from the recession. Married couples with children now make up fewer than one in five households. People don't watch commercials any more, but Facebook users in the U.S. managed to use up 11% of all desktop internet use alone in one typical month. This is all big data information that marketers have to sort through when trying to reach niche audiences, and Carmichael makes it real by providing case studies that back up the numbers.

Buyographics is fascinating from the standpoint of someone who works in marketing, but also for anyone interested what a household looks like in America now.

(I got this book from LibraryThing Early Reviewers.) ( )
