WHO CAN PLAY is a delightful little book. It can be used as a practice reader, and as a counting-book with toddlers and preschoolers. Unfortunately there is no Accelerated Reader number for this book. The Lexile people just designate it as BR.
On most of the pages that have text (large font) there is one sentence. On some pages though there are three short sentences. Here is the sample text from four pages.
One can play.
One can play and play,
One can go up.
One can go down.
One can play and play all day.
As you can see there is lots of repetition and the sentences are very simple and straightforward.
Playing is what WHO CAN PLAY is about. The book starts off saying that one child can play, and then goes on to say that two can play and that that's even more fun. Then three can play and so on to five. (The fifth player is a cute dog!)
With young children Adults can count the girls playing and talk about the activities. You can also run your fingers over the sentences to demonstrate that we read left to right.
The artwork is cheerful and bright and with the dog at the end this book should appeal to the kindergarten and younger crowd. ( )
