"In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands. In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy. Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady's next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable"--… (mer)

Over the course of a couple days, I listened to Will Patton narrate Mr. Mercedes as I read along on my Kindle. Beginning with the heartpulling story of Augie, Patricia, and her baby as they waited in line in the early morning fog for the promise of a job that probably wouldn't happen, their scene comes to a grisly and traumatic end.

I'm a life-long Stephen King reader. I own everything he has written as hardbacks on several shelves of my home library. He could probably publish his laundry list, but so long as he kept the same colloquial warmth and characters, I'd be writing here how much I enjoyed it.

In Mr Mercedes, Stephen King writes a murder-mystery from the perspective of the victims, the killer, and the detective who is hunting him down. Unfortunately for Stephen King, Tami Hoag, Peter Straub, and Stieg Larson are much more experienced in this genre than he is. What Stephen King brings to the table his style, his colloquial characters, his warmth. Mr Mercedes is "Stand By Me meets the Green River Killer"

I enjoyed Mr Mercedes, I wanted to really enjoy it, I wanted to love it. It lacked the cold, hard light of day that Peter Straub brings to murder-horror. It lacked the grisly play of words and human damnation of Tami Hoag and Stieg Larson. Having read better murder mysteries and horror, I appreciate Stephen King's novel for what it is. I'd still recommend it to others, just temper it with "not the finest example of this genre, but still good." ( )

I started reading this under assumption that this would be a Suspense/Thriller novel. There was no suspense and whatever thrill there was, it was not enough to warrant any more than 3 stars.
The plot of the book is very straight forward with no surprises. There were lot of references to American culture and American TV shows that were difficult to understand as a Non-American reader, but overall the reading experience was good. ( )

Where is the best place where madness, murder and 12-cylinders of power and destruction can all combine to make a sweet symphony of chaos...why in the mind of Stephen King of course. In Mr. Mercedes, the first in both the Bill Hodges Trilogy and the Holly Gibney Story Ark, we are introduced to a brilliant cast of characters as only the mind of Mr. King can make them. In this story of "the one that got away" we fallow the antics of a madman that earns the name Mr. Mercedes for a horrific scene that he leaves for police at a job fair after using the stolen sedan to his own twisted devices. After being unable to catch this same madman for a year, we fallow the now Detective-Retired Bill Hodges who was the lead detective on the case. As Bill learns that retirement means nothing much more for him than daytime TV and flirting morbidly with his fathers old service revolver...and old "friend" from his past decides to message him, see how things are...and thus the story begins. This first chapter in both series is sure to captivate you and draw you in, not only until the end of this book but right into the next installment...Finders Keepers. ( )

Good, solid thriller, but can't quite give it a 4. Had a bit of a by-the-number thriller feel to it, but of course, Stephen King always brings his innate storytelling ability to the table. Whereas most authors struggle to create a truly disturbing psychopath, King does so effortlessly. I enjoyed the other characters as well, and it really was a very enjoyable tale over all. But ultimately the standard "race against the clock" trope that is employed prevents Mr. Mercedes from transcending the thriller genre. So a strong three stars, but I stress that the book is definitely worth reading. ( )

Augie Odenkirk had a 1997 Datsun that still ran well in spite of high mileage, but gas was expensive, especially for a man with no job, and City Center was on the far side of town, so he decided to take the last bus of the night.
