Whilst some of this book was useful to me, I found myself reading the first sentence of many paragraphs and continuing on, primarily because the point was made in the first sentence and didn't need the rest of the paragraph. The writing process is well described and analysed, but I thought quite a bit of the book was simply too stodgey for my taste. ( ) Definitely good material here, including a helpful way to think about the stages of a writing project and the wonderful insight that writer's block is simply a case of not being able to write at the standard you expect from yourself (versus not being able to write at all). However, I had already heard Mr. Millman speak at a writers' conference and most of the best insights actually came from his talk, rather than the book. And, I'm sorry to say, I didn't find any value in the chapters contributed by his daughter. She may well be a fine writer, but her musings didn't help me. By all means, take a look at this book, but you might want to consider a library copy first. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
"How can I become more disciplined? How do I know if I'm talented? Should I self-publish? These are just a few of the perennial and contemporary questions addressed in this delightfully different guide. The authors - from different generations and writing genres - first help the reader assess where they are on their path. They then walk aspiring writers through five universal stages - Dream, Draft, Develop, Refine, and Share. While these stages apply to writers of every stripe, the emphasis is always on the reader navigating his or her own challenges, process, and goals. Insight-producing prompts and the wisdom of diverse artists (from Steinbeck and Thoreau to Spike Lee, Marilyn French, and Tom Clancy) help make every writer's journey of creation as rewarding as its destination"--
"Reflections and advice on writing and publishing, addressing topics such as discipline, talent, and self-publishing as well as personal process and goals, based on the authors' combined experience in writing novels, nonfiction, memoir, and print and online journalism. Includes writing prompts and quotations"-- Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
