Widowed Kate Everett is looking forward to starting her "second act." She's planned out everything that she wants--a new house, a new job, maybe even a new man. She can't wait until everything falls into place. But life has a way of butting in, and Kate soon finds herself dealing with unexpected houseguests, helping her daughter plan the world's smallest wedding, and sudden unemployment. Things get even more complicated with the reappearance of her old college love, Jake. He realizes the mistake he made years ago in letting her go, and is eager to win her back. Kate thinks that she and Jake can build something real, and that maybe her happy ending is in front of her at last. But the arrival of Edward, her daughter's future father-in-law, presents Kate with an unexpected choice. It looks like real happiness may require a slight change of plan.… (mer)

I really ended up loving this book and want to thank a friend who recommended it to me.

The protagonist of this novel is Kate Everett. Widowed for five years she finally decides to down-size from her huge house to a nice townhouse to get ready for the second stage of her life. However, things don't go as planned with Kate still thinking about what could have been with her first love from college popping up into her life and her family causing her fits.

There are so many novels out there with characters in their fifties trying to figure out what's next but this once I thought did a great job accurately portraying what life is like for older women and men.

I thought the character of Kate was just fantastic. I wanted to hang out and drink with her and one of her besties Cheryl and just laugh at things. Especially with Kate's insights about women in romance novels always opening bakeries, businesses, or other things and somehow finding themselves. I have not read a romance novel that has actually made me laugh out loud so much in such a long time I just ended up promptly buying her other book "Better Off Without Him" and can't wait to devour that book as well.

What made it really work for me though is that Kate did not take the "easy" option but the one that worked for her. Things did not magically get right in her life she had to work at it while also being honest about her marriage to her deceased husband.

I definitely recommend this novel! ( )

It's been said that if you want to make God laugh then tell him your PLANS. All Kate wants is happiness and no empty nest syndrome. Well, Madi Brown isn't God, but Dee Ernst did a great job at making me believe that her character's master plan would work. And then things went LEFT, as in all the way left. She suddenly had to deal with life as it came, and that made this story a draw. Case in point was Kate's change in relationship status. To have not one, not two, but three men pursuing you at one point? See Madi pout. I want a Tom, and Edward and a Jake!

I piled on the adoration for A Slight Change of Plan for all of the right reasons. It was a memory fest, like turning the pages in a treasured photo album. It made me recall my very own "the one who got away." I relished in all of the good. And the main character's mom? What a hoot! She was so feisty and independent, very much like my own.

All of this was wrapped up, adorned in a literary pretty bow with a story premise of learning to live in the PRESENT and making room for real love. The takeaway is that you shouldn't have to wonder if someone would change for you, the person who is for you will show you in their actions. YOU make them WANT to change---for the better.

Book: A Slight Change of Plan
Author: Dee Ernst
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Length: Approximately 352 Pages

I've put off writing my review for A SLIGHT CHANGE OF PLAN by DEE ERNST for quite a few days. The reason is simple. I just don't want to face the fact that I've finished it. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book! I just hate that it had to end, and I want Ms. Ernst to know that I WANT MORE FROM THESE CHARACTERS! I'm begging you to write a follow up.

Kate Everett is ready to simplify her life. Her husband died eight years ago, her children are grown and out of the house and she has a stressful job as a tax attorney. She decides to sell the big house and buy a condo, quit her job for something she loves to do and start dating again.

That's when the fun begins! Her youngest son and his girlfriend move into the upstairs of her new condo. Her mom that hasn't spoken a word to Kate in years can no longer live alone, so she has to move into Kate's basement. Her first love and the man she never got over after he dumped her in college has just "waved" to her on the Internet dating site her sister signed her up on.

I highly recommend this book for all women, but if you are over the age of forty-five, this is a MUST read! The interactions between Kate and her friends and family had me laughing so hard, I had to put my Kindle down because I could no longer see the screen through the tears of laughter. This is a superbly written account of the life of a mature woman and I WANT MORE!!!!!

I read an ARC copy of A SLIGHT CHANGE OF PLAN by Dee Ernst and now I have to wait until it's released before I can gift a copy to my friends. I'm counting the days down because I know that they will love it as much as I did. This is one of the few books I've read that will stay on my Kindle instead of moving it to my cloud for much needed room because I want it close at hand to read over and over.

If you liked Steel Magnolias, I'm going to go out on a limb here and tell you that you're going to enjoy this book even more. My reasoning for this is that I think one of the things I enjoyed most about A SLIGHT CHANGE OF PLAN was the fact that it did not slam men as so many books or movies do when the author writes about mature women. Great job, Ms. Ernst! Again, I am begging you for more from these characters. PLEASE? ( )
