Even allowing for the fact this was written as no more than a family account in the period of the great migrations of the Midwest I found it unreadable. I was led into trying to read this book by the account of a visit in a trip of exploration of the Wollaston claim by Jonathan Raban in his excellent work "Bad Land" (http://www.librarything.com/work/17777) not realizing that after his account, there was really nothing left to say.

As the author himself, Percy Wollaston, warned as he handed the pages to his son - "nothing much, probably not worth the trouble of reading."

Regretfully and with respect to the family's efforts and hardships, I agree.
