This book, Feathers Not Just for Flying by Melissa Stewart, is an informational text about birds and the importance of the feathers. The book shows the readers many different birds and explains the different kinds of feathers birds have and the uses for each. It is a great resource for learning about birds in general or diving deeper into the significance and uses of feathers.
I love this book because it integrates birds from all over the world and gives readers useful tools for discovering the importance of feathers to birds.
This would be a great book for talking about animal habitats and adaptations. I would read it to my students as an introduction to the variety of birds in our world. Then, I would use each page (each different bird focused on in the book) as a way to study and learn about that specific bird and its habitat. I would also tie in some art projects into this as students could replicate the feathers they read about or design a bird themselves or use feathers to create artwork. You could even integrate geography while studying the birds from the book (as each picture of the bird is labeled with the location of the picture) and bring in knowledge of that place in order to better understand the birds living there. Who knew feathers had so many different jobs? Most children know feathers help birds fly, but feathers can also keep birds warm or cool, help them float or plunge, provide cushion, act as sunscreen, distract predators, make whistling noises, and so much more. Each page of this book highlights a unique function of feathers along with a close-up illustration of an individual feather and the accompanying bird. A Louisiana anhinga is included to demonstrate how feathers can act as weights to help the bird plunge underwater to search for food. Beautiful watercolor illustrations and straightforward, easy-to-follow facts. ( )

This interesting book is about sixteen different birds and their many uses of their feathers. The book explains how feathers are not just for flying, but are used for a variety of practical purposes. I enjoyed this book because of the scientific information it presented. I was able to learn about different birds and the other uses for their wings such as cover, protection, mating etc. This book would be suitable for grades second through fifth and can be used to teach similes because of how the text describes the feathers like another object. Did you know that feathers help a bird to do more than fly and keep warm? Feathers can be like a sponge, or a backhoe! Sixteen birds and the special ways they use their feathers are featured. The multi-layered text allows adults to read the book to younger children with optional details for older children.

This picture book was a very pleasant read. The borders of the illustrations made it seem as if I was reading a postcard or looking at a stamp. The art work is very pleasing to the eye. When a feather is described doing a certain action it is referenced to a similar action that people are familiar with.
