In its 300-year history, there has never once been a scandal at Mullings, ancestral home of the decent but dull Stodmarsh family. Until, that is, Edward Stodmarsh makes an ill-advised second marriage to the scheming Regina Stapleton, who insists on bringing her family's 'ornamental hermit' to live on the estate. Suddenly everyone wants to visit Mullings to glimpse this mysterious figure. Strange but harmless, thinks Florence Norris, the family's longstanding housekeeper. But events take a sinister turn with the arrival of sudden, violent death - and suddenly the hermit doesn't seem so harmless after all.… (mer)

I have the next one in the series from the library - else, I might not have finished the book. I greatly dislike mysteries without enough clues - vague hints of issues - and the writing style was blah.

Hopefully the series will get better, we will see.

Synopsis: Florence Norris has returned to Mullings, a place she had been in service before leaving to marry, as the house keeper. Unfortunately she suspects one of the residents has committed murder. Florence can't prove anything and doesn't think she will be believed if she shares her suspicions, so she remains quite until a second murder occurs.
Review: This was a good book for 'meeting the crew' and it was interesting in that it gives a view of life in the 1800s. I'm never too appreciative of females who are not willing to take chances, but the motives of the Florence character are well explained and reasonable for someone in this time period and social level. I'm quite willing to read another book in this series. ( )

Florence Norris is 14 years old when she begins at Mullings as a kitchen maid. The story gives background information of all the characters in a way you really get to know them. The storyline takes place over many years and begins with a suspected murder but can never be proved, the start of the story is in 1900. If you enjoy cozy mysteries in the countryside and a historical background you will love this book.
