Differentiating Instruction With Menus: Biology offers teachers everything needed to create a student-centered learning environment based on choice. This book presents six different types of menus that students can use to select exciting advanced-level products that they will develop so teachers can assess what has been learned, instead of using a traditional worksheet format. Topics addressed include biology basics, biodiversity and environments, genetics, human body systems, and the different phyla typically included in the biology curriculum. Differentiating Instruction With Menus: Biology contains attractive reproducible menus, each based on the levels of Bloom's revised taxonomy as well as incorporating different learning styles. These menus can be used to guide students in making decisions as to which products they will develop after studying a major concept or unit. Grades 9-12… (mer)

I'm not a teacher, but my wife is - so I hear a lot about differentiating in a high school science environment. I read this book and asked a lot of questions. The format of the book is approachable and has a LOT of great information for biology teachers. I wasn't able to follow through on any of the options presented, but my wife thoroughly enjoyed reading it and discussing with her peers. Recommended for teachers of biology (of course). ( )

This book is an excellent guide to using choice to help students self-motivate in the study of biology. I highly recommend this book to homeschoolers, as it is very easily adapted into educating students of varying ages, grades, interests, and capabilities. I received my copy from Librarything Early Reviewers, and as a result I will be seeking out other of the 'menus' books to add to my childrens' curriculum. ( )

Differentiating Instruction with Menus: Biology, is an instructional book for teachers of High School Biology. The concept of giving students choices in how they present learned material can be applied to any classroom setting. The first chapters explain the idea of using menus to give students choices and the rest of the book are sample lessons. This book could be a valuable resource for teachers looking for a way to engage their students in active learning.

I won this book from LibraryThing Early Reviewers Program. It is a very good solid book for learning. It gives the students choices which should make learning more interesting and fun. ( )

Westphal delivers extremely well thought-out options for allowing students to adapt specific subject areas to their learning styles and to feel more involved in their own educational process. I believe that this book would be best suited to being used sparingly, however - perhaps once or twice over the course of the school year. Otherwise the teacher runs the risks of saddling his or her students with repetitive options and of alienating those students of a decidedly more concrete bent. Personally, I would have been insulted as an advanced high school student to be asked to create mobiles, acrostics, greeting cards, et cetera, in the name of science. ( )
