Asked to pick up a "package" at the airport by an old friend he barely remembers, Thomas is shocked when he finds two desperate children looking to him for help. As he's reluctantly drawn into the murderous plot of a ruthless cult, Thomas is forced to come face-to-face with his own torturous guilt over the tragic loss of his family and faith. Title: Unseen (formerly published as Blind Sight by Tyndale)
Author: James Pence
Pages: 400

During a casual dinner conversation with my girlfriend, we perused various book seller sites looking for novels. When we came across Unseen, reading the synopsis, we looked at each other and knew this was one to add to our list of must reads! Recently, on FaceBook, I came across the publisher, sent a message to the company and the rest is history. Now, here it is the early morning hours of a Sunday, the novel has been completely read, thoroughly enjoyed and now I hope to entice you to read it too!
The world over has seen many cults spring up and many of them have been found to be dangerous. Such is the setting for the novel where a couple of people from various backgrounds begin to walk a path that leads to unforeseen destruction. The organization looks like it is focused on caring for the environment and the poor, but peel back the layers and one would soon discover the diabolical setup. The organization’s goal is to rule the world and anyone who got in the way was “converted”. The fictional work James Pence wrote is on one hand entertaining; yet, on another it sadly reflects those duped by these leaders who want total control.
Thomas Kent is hiding on his land, but not because the organization is seeking to “convert” him; he just exists from day-to-day. When he receives an email followed by with a voicemail from Peter, a friend from his college days, Peter pleads with him for one thing, “to save his children”. Kent remembers a code they created in college and that sends him into life-threatening action. Unknowingly, that one request sends Thomas to face the one shameful act he has been trying to avoid facing for years.
Now, if I tell you too much, it might ruin the tension-building climax and the astounding ending to this face-paced novel. I couldn’t put the book down because of the constant twists and turns the plot contained that will grip any reader’s attention! The many diverse players in the novel and the nonstop action, suspense and thrill make it so compelling to keep turning pages until late into the night! I hope you take time to enjoy this thrilling novel!
My rating is 5 stars.

Title: Blind Sight
Author: James H. Pence
Pages: 404
Year: 2003
Publisher: Tyndale
Thomas Kent is a former pastor, who has given up on life as well as God. He lost his family in a tragic accident and now just wants to die. He receives an enigmatic email followed by a very brief phone call with a pleading message to its listener. Thomas decides he will obey the message from an old acquaintance and heads for the airport to pick up the package as requested. What he realizes once he arrives at the airport amidst rapidly declining weather is that the package is two children. Why would his college acquaintance send his children to Thomas? Thomas has so much guilt and grief about his family’s accident he doesn’t want to deal with these young, 10-year-old, twin children. As soon as he leaves the airport building, someone approaches the children and tries to take them. Thomas thwarts that move and soon his world as he has known it is turned upside down.
He discovers someone really is after the children and he must protect them until he gets them to their mother. He made a pledge while in a Christian group in college to help any member of the group when they faced dire situations. This one certainly qualifies. Someone is out to kill these children and he soon learns since he has helped them, he is on the hit list too. Their mother, Justine, has been in hiding for three years as she tried to expose the religious cult she worked for, which is the same cult that is after the children, as frauds among many other illegal crimes. How are they even going to find her? Justine’s husband has sacrificed everything to get his children to safety. Did he make a wise choice in choosing Thomas? Thomas is just an ousted pastor. How can he possibly protect these children from trained mercenaries? Where is God in all of this? Thomas has been angry with God for two years. He rails at God again for allowing innocent children to be hurt. Can he see God at work in this situation and find his way back to God or will he drown in his bitterness and sorrow?
Wow! This action-packed, adrenaline-pumping book grabbed my attention from page one and didn’t let go until the climactic end! I highly recommend this suspense thriller. The chapters are short, which keeps the tension ramped up. The characters are well-defined, and I could relate to them so I was able to easily get involved in the story. The story is well-written and I thought believable. I am definitely going to read some of this author’s other books and will review them here. Don’t miss this great read!
My rating is 5 stars.

Do not read Blind Sight before you go to bed if you have a specific bed time. You will NOT want to put it down. At least that is how I felt. That was refreshing. The story had characters I liked and characters I hated. Each one was realistically drawn out and all seemed to fully react and act the way one might expect. The story starts off with a bang and keeps you curious through out. It is definitely an easy read, because it does not lose steam!

The story was told through several of the characters although the main plot is centered around Thomas Kent's efforts in helping this family. I was enthralled by the workings of the cult. It was pretty creepy how things operated, and although I know this was a book, I am also aware that there are specific ways to make a person fold under pressure and totally weaken them. It is also an amazing story of how power can corrupt, and how a painful past if not faced and resolved can be so very damaging.

Obviously there is a religious element and struggle in the novel. It lent the message clear for me that God has a plan and we are probably not always going to know what it is. The important thing is to know He is there.

Blind Sight is a book that is not only entertaining, but it reminded me that God doesn't guarantee an easy life, but He will always be there.

I don't have a star rating, but I would give this a 4.25 star rating if I did. The main thing for me is whether I would recommend this book to others, and the answer is YES. Definitely! ( )
