I liked this story very much. A simple story made complex by its characters and their feelings, needs, dreams and relationships; by the way its themes are weaved seamlessly into the story, making it a beautiful read that makes us cry, laugh, despair and reflect on certain aspects of our lives.

We begin the story with Olsen's restlessness, which hints at the emptiness of his life, at the hole in his soul only Ben can fill, and afterwards, after their first meeting, Mary. He is only waiting for the world to end, as he himself claims more than once, but Ben and Mary are the ones who bring him hope, the family he never allowed himself to have. Although he seems to be a determined, intelligent man, it is visible his despair and hopelessness with his current emotional life. With the kind of parents and childhood he must have had, it is no wonder. But he seems to be searching for something he himself knows not. He finds it in Mary and Ben, and the story flows beautifully from there.

The bond between Olsen and Ben is beautifully done, their relationship one of the things that makes this book such a pleasant read. We see it in the way they talk to each other, the way Ben is not afraid to cry and show his pain in front of Olsen, in the way our main character calls the boy the "child of his heart", much like Ben refers to him, in his incredible essay, as the "heart". In fact, one of my favorite parts of the book was Ben's essay, which touched me with its beauty and emotion. I can imagine how Olsen must have felt when he read it.

The story also deals with the question of God and religion and the search for faith, and it's interesting to see Olsen's attempt to find his own lost faith; but as he himself says, you can not spin it out of thin air, thus his is a search he dooms from the beginning, saying it's too late for him. And yet, his thoughts bring him back to it, his desire for it, his need to believe in something beyond himself and his life. Perhaps, in the end, he finds out it is still not too late, despite the bittersweet ending of the story.

I particularly enjoyed Olsen's thought process and how it seamlessly weaved into the story itself; how previous conversations would come back to him, would haunt him at times, or give him hope in others. The scene during the accident and afterwards, at the hospital, is one of my favorites in the book, because we can see the entirety of Olsen's despair and fear in his thoughts.

The ending was not what we would call a happy one, not one of those "and they lived happily ever after" endings so famous in fairytales, but life is rarely that perfect. It's a bittersweet ending, that left me wondering about all the what-ifs and lost opportunities, but it also seemed to fit. I was also curious about that letter from Alexandra, but I believe it's for the best that we do not let this character from the past intrude too much in this present. ( )

I was sent this book by the author, and so I was most interested to see what it was about.

It took me a while to get through it - I found it a challenging read. The story is well-plotted and the characters well drawn - especially for a first novel. It is, however, perhaps best directed at an older teen market.

I flicked across to Amazon and looked at the reviews - all 131 of them! It seems it may have been set as a class reading exercise for college students. I enjoyed reading their comments and seeing the book through their eyes. ( )
