"With shades of The Hunger Games, Ender's Game, and Game of Thrones, debut author Pierce Brown's genre-defying epic Red Rising hit the ground running and wasted no time becoming a sensation. Golden Son continues the stunning saga of Darrow, a rebel forged by tragedy, battling to lead his oppressed people to freedom from the overlords of a brutal elitist future built on lies. Now fully embedded among the Gold ruling class, Darrow continues his work to bring down Society from within. A life-or-death tale of vengeance with an unforgettable hero at its heart, Golden Son guarantees Pierce Brown's continuing status as one of fiction's most exciting new voices. Praise for Red Rising "[A] spectacular adventure. one heart-pounding ride. Pierce Brown's dizzyingly good debut novel evokes The Hunger Games, Lord of the Flies, and Ender's Game. [Red Rising] has everything it needs to become meteoric."--Entertainment Weekly "I don't know what Pierce Brown did before he started writing books, but whatever it was, he was wasting his time. Fast-paced, gripping, well-written--the sort of book you cannot put down. I am already on the lookout for the next one."--Terry Brooks, New York Times bestselling author of The Sword of Shannara "Pierce Brown has done an astounding job at delivering a powerful piece of literature that will definitely make a mark in the minds of readers."--The Huffington Post "Ender, Katniss, and now Darrow: Pierce Brown's empire-crushing debut is a sprawling vision of humanity's diaspora to the stars."--Scott Sigler, New York Times bestselling author of Nocturnal "[A] great debut. The author gathers a spread of elements together in much the same way George R. R. Martin does."--Tor.com"--… (mer)

Golden Son takes up where Red Rising left off, following the continuing adventures of Darrow, the Red turned Gold as he tries to tear apart society... and hopefully rebuild it for the better?

Overall, the world building is about the same as the first book in that it's better/more believable than the conceits of most YA novels and I like the sci fi tropes. We're also starting to see some of the exceptions to the rules that everyone (in universe) thinks were so unassailable the first time around, which is interesting. We do get a more expanded scope though, seeing much of the rest of the Solar System, which is neat. And there are interesting hints at some of the history of this world; like how the Obsidians got to where they are and why there are no robots or anything quite like that.

Characterwise, Darrow continues to be a combination of entirely too good at many things and really (almost unforgivably) stupid when it comes to others. I get that he's still a young adult in these books, so some of the decisions he makes do make a sensible lack of sense, but it's really frustrating to read. You don't necessarily have to like the main character of a book to like the series, but it certainly makes it easier. Also, given how Darrow treated him, totally called Roque...

On the positive side, there are some really interesting / crazy action scenes and I really do care about how the whole mess is going to end up. Certainly enough to read the third and final book of the series. When you've risen/fallen so far... ( )

No sophomore slump for Pierce Brown. Darrow is now secure as a high-caste Gold, about to emerge as the best at the Academy when disaster strikes, and he loses favor with one of the ruling elite families. There remain bitter family rivalries as Darrow continues the work of the rebellious Ares, even as doubt creeps in about commitment to the cause of sowing discord to bring about social revolution: equality for all colors. No longer the "golden son," Darrow reassembles his team from the last book to continue his mission in the midst of treachery and class war. ( )

"It's the only way to beat the monsters."
"It's not the only way." I say.
"No?" she asks, surprised.
"You can always become a monster too."

Darrow continues to amaze me, as does Brown. My emotions were throughfully played with as the book progressed; a magnificent feat great books accomplish. Highly recommended read.

The 2nd book in the Red Rising trilogy, this follow-up brings the story in an un-formulaic direction. Somehow this book was able to make the switch from personal battles to space battles without skipping a beat all while keeping motivations realistic. ( )

Received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my word. This book. Where do I even start? Unlike Red Rising, I was hooked from the very beginning of this book. I had so many questions about Darrow and Mustang and what was going to happen now that Darrow was part of Mustang's father's house. For as many questions as this book answered, it gave me that many more for book three. I read this book from start to finish in a couple of hours. I cried, I cringed, I got mad. This may have been the most perfect book I read in 2014 and I'm absolutely devastated I have to wait so long for book 3. ( )
