This is a book of short stories all of which tell of the trader Nicholas van Rijn and the adventurer David Falkayne. The back cover says " it rounds and completes the future history of the Polesotechnic League that spans four thousand years of Earth's interstellar empire..." ( )

The Earth Book of Stormgate is an anthology of short stories and one short novel by Poul Anderson published in 1978. The stories are part of Anderson's "Future History", in particular the time of the Polesotechnic League and the humans interactions with the Ythri. There is a framing story, written by one of the Ythri of Stormgate, which I also found to be of interest. I may have read some of the stories when they were first published but they all seemed new to me and I enjoyed visiting Anderson's universe.

Le avventure del furbo e simpatico mercante Nicholas van Rijn, e del coraggioso esploratore David Falkayn, hanno dato, poco per volta col passare degli anni, forma e consistenza a un "opus magnus" tra i più validi ed importanti della moderna fantascienza. Il presente volume raccoglie undici storie della serie. Questi racconti e romanzi brevi, che si estendono per un arco di quasi mille anni di storia futura, e sono correlati tra loro da una dettagliata carta cronologica dell'intero "arazzo futuro" di Anderson, raccontano minuziosamente l'espansione dei terrestri nella Galassia, il loro incontro con altre razze intelligenti, la nascita e il declino della Lega Polesotecnica (un'associazione di principi-mercanti che ambisce a colonizzare i mondi alieni e a portare in tutta la Galassia le regole del libero commercio). In questo memorabile quadro delineato da Anderson spicca nettamente il complesso e travagliato rapporto tra i terrestri e gli uomini alati di Avalon, che è il filo conduttore che lega i racconti del volume e li inserisce nella struttura omogenea e compatta di una saga di rara bellezza.

This is another of Anderson's collections of short stories written as one novel. It still has that updated Doc Smith feel, and is worth reading. ( )

If you have never read Poul Anderson's future history stories of the Polesotechnic League, this is a great place to start. By the end of this collection of short stories and short novels you will have become very familiar with some wonderful characters and an enchanting imaginative history. My favorite stories were the last four in this work , "The Season of Forgiveness," "Lodestar," "Wingless on Avalon," and Rescue on Avalon." These specific stories further the relationship between humans and the wonderful winged ones the Ythrians. ( )
