I really like this book for multiple reasons. First, I really like the illustrations that helped to depict what the words were telling. It shows the emotions that Callie, the main character, is feeling as she must sell her things before her family moves. Lauren Castillo’s illustrations make it look as though it is a coloring book that is colored in due to her use of lines, which is very visually appealing. I like that Eve Bunting includes why Callie does not want to move and here hopes that she is able to move back. I think that including details of where she lives now and the differences in where she is moving helps to explain why her family must sell some of their belongings. Lastly, I like that this book is relatable to many students who must move and sell their things before moving. I like that the book validates that it is okay to feel sad to let your things go when moving to a different place, but there are always new things to look forward to when you move. The message of this book is that even though you may sell everything, you will always have your family.

Yard Sale, written by Eve Bunting, is about a little girl named Callie, whose family is having money troubles. To downsize and make a little money before they move into their smaller apartment, Callie's family is having a yard sale. Callie is young and doesn't quite understand why strangers are taking her family's belongings. Towards the end of the story, she realizes that her family is what's most important. My heart started to break as I was reading this story because financial troubles are something complicated and hard for young children to understand; however, it is a reality that many families face. I rated this book five stars because I loved the central message behind it, and I think it spoke well of a difficult situation. I would use this story to teach plot and how to find the author's central message in a story. Also, I would use this story as a mentor text for my younger middle schoolers, for example, fourth or fifth graders; however, the message in this story is profound so that it would be beneficial for all ages, though. I love the way this story touches on tough and relatable topics, and I highly recommend it to be read in the classroom. ( )

It's very hard to get rid of your belongings, especially for a child. There are memories attached to each item, and it can feel like you are getting rid of memories along with the items. Yard sale shows you that all you need is those that love you around you. In the end, material things do not matter all you need is those around you that you care about. ( )

very real look at loosing a home, poverty, with a focus on family and love.

The book "Yard Sale" was very melancholy from the very beginning. It tells the story of how a family must leave their home because they are unable to afford it anymore. They must sell all of their belongings and move to a small apartment. I connected with the story because I have moved about 9 times throughout my life. I have lived in 9 different homes and each time we had to give away a little more of our belongings to fit. I connected with Callie when the man was taking her bike and her father had to remind her that it wouldn't fit in the apartment. I have moved from houses to apartments and then back to houses many times and I learned how to let go of many things. Although my family has never been truly poor, we have had times when we needed to change a certain way of our life to save money for more important things. When I step back and try to imagine the life of people in the lower class, I realize that people should always be grateful for everything they do have. Poverty is not something that should be taken lightly. There are families who struggle every day just to feed their children. There are families who have nothing and are pushing themselves to be able to live their life. Even though the book tries to send the message of "Home isn't about what you have but who you hold close" there is no way to deny that these situations are difficult and heartbreaking. ( )
