"Jacqueline Woodson, one of today's finest writers, tells the moving story of her childhood in mesmerizing verse. Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. Touching and powerful, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged, each line a glimpse into a child's soul as she searches for her place in the world. Woodson's eloquent poetry also reflects the joy of finding her voice through writing stories, despite the fact that she struggled with reading as a child. Her love of stories inspired her and stayed with her, creating the first sparks of the gifted writer she was to become. Praise for Jacqueline Woodson: Ms. Woodson writes with a sure understanding of the thoughts of young people, offering a poetic, eloquent narrative that is not simply a story. but a mature exploration of grown-up issues and self-discovery"-The New York Times Book Review"-- "The author shares her childhood memories and reveals the first sparks that ignited her writing career in free-verse poems about growing up in the North and South"--… (mer)

Brown Girl Dreaming av Jacqueline Woodson

  1. 10
Autobiography of a Family Photo av Jacqueline Woodson (susanbooks)
susanbooks: Autobiography of a Familly Photo is a prose novel and stands beautifully on its own. Read alongside Brown Girl Dreaming, the earlier book seems like the nightmare, R-rated version of the later one. Both are stunning.

Coaltown Jesus av Ron Koertge (Ciruelo)

A novel in verse about author Jacqueline Woodson's childhood. Although Jackie struggled with her reading, she discoveried that she had a special ability as a storyteller and grew up to be a great writer. As a black girl growing up in the 1960s she and her family had a hard time. Jackie and her family had to leave North Carolina and her grandparents even though they didn't want to. But Jackie loved her family and learned to adjust to her new life in New York. Not too many words on a page, this is a book that won't take you too long to read. But you'll wish it was longer. ( )

RGG: Very strong fictional biography conveying the time, the personal challenges, and the racism while developing an empathetic portrait. Unfortunately, the cover targets the book towards younger readers than the actual reading interest of 10-14.

In this memoir, written in lyrical verse, the author tells the story of her childhood as she negotiates her African American heritage and history, geography, family dynamics, friends, and community.

All the awards? Completely deserved. And Brown Girl Dreaming may technically be a children's book, but it's one of the best books of any kind that this 50-year-old has ever read. ( )

The verse form really worked in favor of the storytelling in this book. Though this felt a little slow at the get-go, the character development overall was just beautiful. I particularly loved the moments with her grandfather and Maria and *may* have gotten just a little bit weepy at the circ desk by the very end. DEEP BREATH.

Counting as my National Book Award item for the Read Harder challenge. ( )
